I didn't get to see it, but a history making win for Riner. I'm surprised how much buzz there is in work about it! Very impressive feat.

Were there any Irish competing? How do we stand in the general world of Judo?

    Hi,
I'm no judo player but have bjj experience. However I have the up most respect of judo as a sport and self defense so i'm not having a go at judo when I'm asking this.
Watched some of judo world championships on youtube and in a few of the fights when one person went for a throw and was unsuccessful he sort of fell on his knees on the floor and turtled up so the ref had to stand them up again. In some of the fights this happened numerous times constantly slowing the action and effectively ruining the fight.
My question is this; is this common in judo fights and are any preventative measures being taken by judo bodies to counter this somewhat negative tactic? Because when a judo fight is done fast and furious I find it a very exciting sport to watch.

    Thanks

I'd have to see examples of the fights.

But generally someone doing this can be penalized for passivity, however turtling in itself its not illegal.

The other fighter can, and mostly does, follow their opponent to the mat.

There can be various reason's why this doesn't happen, speaking personally if I know the ref is quick to stand fighters up I'll conserve my energy and won't try too hard to open up my opponent.

I once think I heard somewhere that an Irish guy from Lusk won a World Judo Championship title a few years ago. Any truth in it or if not so, has any Irish person ever won a a World Judo Championship title ?

Well we've had lads win at Master's level, but at the World Judo Championships I really don't think so.

I'll try find out for you of course, I'm really not a great historian on anything.

We've had lads fight at the olympics too.

We'd need Lukeyjudo or Donal Tannam here (I can't remember Donals user name) for this kind of info.

    Cheer's Burnt, thanks for that.

I was training out in Kieran's tonight, anyone with the slightest interests in Judo should try get to his class. Such a gentleman in the club, top notch instruction, advice, motivation - he's the complete package.

I train under Keith Gough regularly too.

but now lives outside of the country. She infact picked up two 3rds at the worlds
both U72 and Open. Profile on Judoinside

Her sister Joyce was also pretty successful though not to the same extent

Hey guys, I was there last week for Friday (mens -90, -81 and womens -70). It was absolutely fantastic! The atmosphere was amazing as there were people of all nationalities competing and spectating, but even more so when the japanese were winning as the homecrowd were really getting into it!

There was some fantastic judo, in particular from Iliadis (obviously), and Kunihara and Takamatsu of Japan got some big throws in too! Seeing it in person was great. I just wish I had been there for the whole thing.

I also got to meet Sugimoto the female +78 champion which was kinda cool.

if anyone is in japan watching/doing judo in the next while give me a shout, its possible we could meet up. i think theres grand slam in tokyo in december (?) which i might go to as well.

I thought I'd just update this thread with this little story from the World Master's in Canada (Aug 2010)..

    http://www.irishjudoassociation.ie/news/item/356-3-brave-irishmen
Report On 12th World Masters Championship Montreal August 2010

August 2010 saw the final year where two distinct World Masters Championship events competed for Master Squad Members' time and money. The original (since 1998) Canadian-inspired Masterathlete.com organisers hosted their final A.G.M. and tournament in Montreal and after some painful debate voted overwhelmingly to wind up and allow the IJF to run a single annual World Masters Championships in future years. Dermot Killeen is the only Irish Master Squad member to compete in both tournaments this year and he was joined by Paul Cummins and Donal Tannam. With the significant exception of Lydia Richie, this was the same contingent that attended the 11th WMC in Atlanta in 2010. By entering as many categories as humanly possible the three Irish delegates all improved personally on last year's performance and possibly any event in their Master Squad careers. Detailed results are available on the Masterathlete Web Site but in brief Dermot Killeen brought home two Gold Medals, Paul Cummins one Silver and two Bronze, and Donal Tannam three Bronze.

Donal was beaten in the semi-finals in the Open Weight, avoiding (perhaps fortunately!) coming up against Dermot in the same category. Dermot did not enter the brand new Ne Waza category as he was getting some essential physio but he returned to the field in time to win the Open Weight Category in fine style (all ippon wins). Paul and he also missed out on the afternoon Team Event due to their flight times, so who knows how many more medals thesetwo might have won as they were both on top form. A team called Bulldog Spirit (incorrectly subtitled Britain and Northern Ireland on the official Web-site) approached Donal to fight the next weight up in the Team Event and they beat Germany to win 3rd place and secure Donal his third Bronze Medal.

Dermot played his usual canny and effective judo to overcome all comers, but it was Paul Cummins who brought the house down on his third day in the Open Weight Category where he beat progressively larger players from USA, Great Britain and Austria with skillful ippons. His final win not only
generated the most noise from casual onlookers but prompted the medal master of ceremonies to compare the bout to a grizzly bear and a chihuahua (see the photos on Flickr to appreciate what he meant). The small Irish Contingent stuck together to provide vocal and moral support at each other's events and even went clothes/souvenir shopping with Vivian Tannam, Pam and Lisa Garland (development squad member) in recognition of their superior skills in this equally challenging arena. Another social highlight was the arrival of Paul Cummin's Washington relations, one of whom (Tom Conner) won some money in the casinos and treated the entire party to an evening meal. It was a bitter sweet event knowing it was the last run by this organisation but the three players were glad to be there at the finish.

    Report by Donal Tannam

Donal is a contributor to this forum, and coaches the lads in WildGeese.

Interesting, just shows how hard it is to win a genuine World Championship. Like how many times have I read of an " Irish World Champion " in the Irish Fighter in Kickboxing, Karate, TKD etc I'm not going to name a certain Karate club/organisation, but everytime I read the Irish Fighter they seem to have won a host of medals as some European or World Championship of some kind !!! :)

( BTW, the publishers of the Irish Fighter are not to blame, they only print the stories sent to them )

how does the ne-waza category work?

No idea, last night was the first time I'd heard mention of it.

I'll see Donal, Paul or Dermot during the week and ask.
