Going from highlights to lowlights

How difficult is it to go from having highlights to getting lowlights done?

The first few sets of highlights I had done were quite blonde, and I've since had them toned down significantly, so that they are just a little lighter than the natural shade of my hair (which is kind of in between a very dark blonde and a very, very light brown - somewhere around dark ash blonde, if I was to put a colour on it). However, I was thinking of asking to have some lowlights put in my hair for a change, just a shade or two darker than my natural colour.

Given that I have the blonde highlights in at the moment, and that I definitely want to avoid that streaky combination of blonde highlights and dark lowlights, would I need to have my hair stripped in order for the lowlights to be put in? Or can the highlights just be toned down to blend in with the natural colour of my hair?

The low lights would be added along with your blonde! They will probably keep a bit of blonde but not as much as you have in it now!

Its quite easy to do and no your hair won't have to be stripped!

I have a similar query. My hair is the same sort of colour as the OP, and I've got a full head of blonde highlights, but I'd like to go darker. Every time I attempt this I'm told that I'm too pale to go very dark (granted), but if I go for a lighter brown it will turn out gingery. Apparently Irish hair has a disposition to go a bit gingery when using colour my colorist said. Does anyone know how I can get back to my more natural colour (same as OP's) without just having horrible dark roots?

Ideally in the future I'd like to only have a few lighter highlights scattered across my head.

I naturally have dark brown hair and I'm very pale. I went completely blonde... maybe... a year ago now. I ended up with a very light blonde colour and I wasn't overly happy with it. I asked the hairdresser to tone the colour down a bit and give me a more browny blonde colour. So she gave me two different tones of lowlights and no highlights. One shade was much darker than my blonde hair and the other shade was inbetween my blonde colour and the darker lowlight. Am I making any sense? I just can't be sure.

Anyway I was REALLY happy with the way it turned out and it looked very natural. No streakiness or ginger in sight.

I eventually went back to my naturally dark brown colour though, couldn't be bothered anymore with the crazy prices that Toni and Guy charge.

Ok I don't know what your hairdresser is talking about with the ginger!

Tell your hairdresser you want low lights - you don't want to go dark but you want some darker colours in your hair!
