Now that 4.1 is out, I'm anxious to try it out initiating the call using an email address rather than that bugbear, the rogue British SMS (which, even more irritatingly, isn't even a genuine British mobile number).

Post here of either your experiences or PM if you wish to give it a lash.

That person needs to be in your contacts with an email address and one that I suppose they have configured on their iPhone. TBH, I dont exactly know, since until now I have always used it with a GSM number, and hence my interest.

I think he refers to placing a call: what address do you use for your intended party? IMO, it requires it being in contacts in the first place.

I thought that email activation would only occur for the new iPod Touch, where your email address is the only unique ID.

On the iPhone, it uses your defined 'My Phone Number' as the Facetime user ID, and thus SMS is needed to do the back and forth activation stuff.

I could be wrong on all that.

Perhaps you're right: but the option to initiate the call by eMail was not there before, giving hope. Am just fed up with this 3IRL "charge".

The only reason that new option is there is so that you can call people on their new iPod Touch. Nothing to do with activation as far as I know...

    A fair point.

Wiki suggest that it uses your apple ID to identify you (you know, the one you registered with iTunes). Nothing to say what happens if that person has two devices though - maybe both ring?

I imagine this a precursor to having a PC/Mac client for facetime so you're not limited to phone-phone communication.
