One does a lot of Googling & comes up with out of date answers for earlier iphones

My Situation :Voda UK iPhone 4 on 4.0.1 just out of Box and want to unlock it. I'm confused by this talk of umbrella, etc

Please tell what to do so I'll be able to revert to 4.0.1 (or whatever the then latest unlockable version) is in case of inadvertent upgrade. I know when you use jailbreak there's some application pending - so that's no good and then there's something called umbrella but you can only use latest software that Apple is signing or something. All rather confusing, but I'm a good student and fast learner so please help

After jailbreaking / unlocking and if it needs to go to Apple for repair, do you just do a restore (from day 1) as resetting everything seems to go through a whole rigmarole of having to restore to the latest firmware

    Thanks in advance

Ya can't get blobs for 4.0.1 only blobs ya can save now are 4.0.2 so prey to god ya don't need to restore anytime

You open the jailbreakme.com website on the device. Once complete you open Cydia which is installed by the site, and you tap the button to 'Make my life easier'.

    That's it. Blobs saved.

NOTE this does not work on 4.0.2 so be sure of your version.

When you save your SHSH (Signature HaSH) blob for a particular firmware, say 4.0, it means that you will always be able to restore to that firmware, in this example 4.0, even when apple no longer allow you to do this. So say 4.1 comes out today and you upgrade, then realise that there is no jailbreak for 4.1. You are screwed right? Wrong. Usually apple do not allow you to downgrade after they release a new firmware version, but because you have your 4.0 blobs "on file" you can downgrade to 4.0 and regain your jailbreak ability.

Please do not confuse jailbreaking with unlocking tho. If 4.1 has a newer "baseband" firmware than 4.0, then even if you downgrade to 4.0 your baseband version remains that of the most up to date version - even tho the main iOS firmware Is downgradable, the baseband firmware is not.
The current baseband version (for iPhone 4) Is 1.59.00, so Say 4.1's baseband is version 2.00.00 (this is not a vulnerable firmware and is not able to be carrier unlocked). So if you do update to 4.1 and then downgrade to 4.0, your baseband will remain 2.00.00 and you will still not be able to unlock.

Again, these firmware versions are just examples. I have no idea if the next baseband version is actually 2.00.00 but you get the picture

However, Apple has stopped signing 4.0.1 so you have missed out on that window - you will never be able to revert back to 4.0.1. When you jailbreak (www.jailbreakme.com) open up cydia, it will ask to "make your life easier" just choose yes and your SHSH will be queued "on file"

4.1 is out now, so the only firmware you will be able to get SHSH blobs for (at the time of this writing) is 4.0.2 and 4.1.

Finally, yes - all you need to do to erase traces of jailbreaking is just restore to stock ipsw
