Sore back after weights

Sometimes after going to the gym my back is sore/stiff like my arms. Is this normal or am I doing damage to my back?

I've been making sure not to lift too much and watching my form. I warm up for 15 mins and stretch afterwards.

I read somewhere that crunches are hard on the back so I use the exercise ball for them. Are there any other exercises/machines that are particularly tough on the back?

When your doing squats you fill your lungs with air and tense your abs as to make your rib cage rock solid which stops you from hurting your back as it wont sag.

Your back should never be sore but it can be stiff after doing deadlifts thats like the pump you feel in your arms.
