PSN Download speeds

Does anyone else find that downloading a demo from the PSN store is very slow?

I have a good BB connection, which stays pretty consistent at 6MB. However, when downloading from the PSN it very rarely, if ever reaches that speed.

You're lucky it rarely reaches top speed. Even on crappy P2P I get full speed of about 320k, seems to run at about 40 if I'm lucky on the ps3.

Yeah, the PSN is very slow for me, even just browsing through stuff, it's always been like that for me. I can download a 1Gb demo form XBL in 10 mins but on PSN it takes around 30-50 mins depending on the time of day. On XBL is does not matter, I always get my full download speed or very close to it.

PSN seems to be throttled most of the times.

PES2011 demo has been downloading for 2 hours now and is at 208MB. By way of comparison I downloaded a software update for iOS earlier of about 300MB in under 15mins.

I did the "internet connection test" and got 13Mbps down and 3Mbps up.

Is there a way to check your actual speed as you are downloading something?

It tells you how big the file is in MB, get your stopwatch and calculator out.

    eg. If I download a 650MB in 2m40s, that's

    650*8/((2*60)+40)Mb/s = 32.5Mb/s :p

I find that it normally downloads quite fast. Usually about 2 or 3mb for every second of download. I have however notice it go slow only when it is something that a lot of people are liable to download at the same time.

The firmware download time is better now with the change in that only what's needed is gotten. I've never had a problem with the speed i downloaded 3 or 4 GB of video and other stuff the other week and it was done quickly, as soon as i watch one the next was done.

    Not missing an awful lot.

On subject, my PSN download speeds were alot faster when I was using a wired connection. Now I usually leave a list of things downloading, set my PS to turn off in two hours in settings and then go to work.

PSN always seems pretty slow downloading to me. Particularly irritating are the forced upgrades - I remember having to wait an hour and a half when I first went to play LittleBigPlanet :pac: Compared to the super duper efficient XBL speeds (and smaller patches) it does seem very slow.

Definitely getting better though since Eircom upgraded from 3mb to 7mb (ah, sweet 7mb). Still seem a little slower than I'd like, but I'd agree it is likely down to wireless.

If it's gotten better from the speed increase then the limiting factor was your connection and any observed faster speeds on live at the time would have been due to smaller file size.

Read the thread and you will see that you are not the only one.

Where does that 8 come from?

Should have explained. 8 bits in a byte. ISP speeds are measured in megabits and not megabytes.
