What really is Easy Calving/Docility?

    I am investing in ped cattle in the near future. I have 2 or 3 breeds in my head. It will be part time, so criteria like easy calving and docility are very high.

    Every breed I research on the internet suggest they are easy calving. Some of these breeds are historically/on reputation hard calving breeds. Worse still, when I research individual breeders web sites, they state ease of calving with their animal.

    Another bug bear, and probably worse is, "docile".

    Some body/societies are telling lies!

    Any opinions?
    Any recommendations of breeds if you were starting from scratch?

    Might be worth having a look at this angus sale on 2nd october in tullamore mart, www.cows365.com

    Every breeder is going to say they have quiet cattle, its marketing!

    If the seat's wet, sit on yer hat, a cool head is better than a wet ar5e.

    This is the best source of info for what you are lookling for;

    Click on the Excel File after "Breed percentiles (August 2010)".
    http://www.icbf.com/services/evaluations/beef.php

    Look at the mean value in 'Column K' for the different breeds on the left.
    It cuts through all the bullsh1t from the Breed Societies. It's unbiased information and is collected from marts, factories, all beef farmers in the suckler scheme etc..
    What the data does show is there is as much variation within each breed as across the breeds. Enjoy !!

    This is the most important thing to remember. No breed is easy calving, no breed is docile, but there are bloodlines within each breed that are both. Best of luck with whichever breed you choose
