BTEA - Galway Offices

I went down to the BTEA galway office today to check on my application. I sent my application in early July. I recieved a letter from Welfare last week that my JObseekers Benefit was due to run out the first week of November.

Naturally worried that I might experience a gap in payments I went down to enquire what the story was. I was talking to a lady and I explained my situation to her. I asked her how long my application was going to be and she said she didnt know. I asked her would I be back payed if my application was delayed and she said she didnt know. I asked her if I could go to my community Welfare officer and she said no, that in their eyes I was no in full time education and therefore not entitled to their help.

I asked her what would happen so if my BTEA application wasnt processed by the first week in NOvember and she said she didnt know. Like, if the worst comes to the worst and it does happen Ill have to drop out of college and go on JObseekers allowance just so i dont starve.

She was obviously very stressed and she wasnt very friendly, but then she started sobbing and said that all they get is abuse there. I was completely polite throughout our conversation so was shocked when she broke down. They must put up with an awful lot of abuse there and I felt sorry for her.

However, I then asked do they process applications by date applied (as I sent in my application super early) and she said NO!!!!!! My Jaw dropped....she said all the applications are in a pile upstairs and that theyre working through them. LIke its just common sense that you work through applications by date recieved.

Im going to try and make an appointment with Eamon O Cuiv about my situation as the picture she painted to me more or less looked as if it might be possible Ill be left without a payment for some time as theyre severely undermanned and overworked.

Anyone else have similiar experiences in Galway city office?
