Do all car radios have the same connectors?

    Hi,
I want to put a (relatively) new Kenwood CD/Radio into my ancient 1991 Toyota Hiace, replacing the existing radio. However, before I take the dashboard apart I want to be sure the new radio will match the existing connectors i.e. can I simply remove the wires from the old radio and plug them straight into the new one? Is there a standard connection?

I'm hoping it's that easy but I have a horrible feeling it may not be.....

I can't seem to find a definite answer online so I'd appreciate any advice.

    Cheers,
    bobjim

Basically no they don't, you're new kenwood radio will have an ISO connection on the back, toyota has it's own one of these, you have two choices really, you can by an adapter for the back which will give you the right connect, or you can splice the wires already there and put in the iso connection yourself, should be able to find details on how to do this online. The wiring colours should all be the same.

Just as an fyi it'd be something along these lines http://cgi.ebay.ie/ISO-EXTENSION-HARNESS-LEAD-ADAPTOR-TOYOTA-CAR-RADIO-/260637168807?pt=UK_Cars_Parts_Vehicles_Terminals_Cabling_ET&hash=item3caf2f94a7 probably not this exact one, you'll have to do a little bit of research to find out what you need. I'd highly advise you buy this on the net too, if you try halfords or a motor factors you'll be looking at spending at least 25euro for something that costs them less then 5euro to buy in.

    Thanks for that quick reply.

I took the plunge and removed the old radio, but the existing connector in the van doesn't match the new radio (which has one of those ISO adapter leads). From looking on the web, I THINK I need something like this:

    http://productfinder.autoleads.co.uk/productinfo.aspx?&m=TOYOTA&f=VAN&id=2999&pID=41817

Does that make sense? As you said, I'd like to get the required adapters and connect it myself rather than pay over the odds for this.

    Thanks,

Try halfords or your local car parts place, I don't think they are that dear.

If you bring the radio and the van you should know straight away if you have the right one.
