    Hi looking for some advice.

The rev counter in my car has started to flick up and down in the last few days. Nothing above 1 lets say if im stopped in traffic in neutral but just flickers. The engine is also maybe 5% louder as it does this. Is it somethin i need to fix asap or what?

    Any help gladly taken

Its the idel control valve. Just take it out and give it a clean and that will hopefully fix it.

    Thats great.

Your fairly sure thats what it is. Someone else mentioned spark plug to me?

TBH, it could be anything. If you're going to try fixing it yourself then cleaning the idle control valve is a good place to start.

So you mean a rough idle? Any power loss felt? Could be the above mentioned idle control valve, vacuum leak, or dirty air flow sensor as well.

To be honest, it could be anything!! Idle control valve would be the best of many guesses based on the info available.

Could also be an O2 sensor, Spark plug, ignition coils, ignition leads, etc, etc.

Does your car have AC with Climate control? Could be that the Climate control is set to fully auto, so it might be kicking in the AC from time to time, which would drop your RPM briefly if you were in idle. An "on-the-way-out" AC would also account for the apparent increase in engine noise.

Yeah i would be fairly sure alright. I had a mate with a VW and it had the exact same problem on a new(ish) car too. He went to a load of garages and ended up paying a fortune for them to tell him they hadn't a clue what was wrong with it. Then we both took out the valve, cleaned it and now its working fine. That was over 6 months ago
If i were you i'd clean the valve and if you have any more problems get yourself into a BMW garage for a diagnostic

Power seems fine. Just concerned that driving it will give me bigger problems. TBH id only mess up trying to look at it myself. Would only end up costing me more. To the flipping garage i go!

Maybe try these guys? I've yet to have work done by them, but from talking to them they seem to know their stuff. http://www.bosch.ie/content/language1/html/715_3075.htm
