Does anyone know on average how much a charity expect you to raise for them before they grant you one of their spots in these races?

Varies depending on the charity and race location, for example the Crumlin Medical & Research Foundation expect you to raise €5,500 for a trip to New York. Details here.

I can kind of understand that but if you took care of your own travel and accomodation and just wanted to run in the race. Any idea what they would expect then?

You should ask them. Or try SportstravelInternational, if you're looking for a guaranteed entry, and then just collect for a charity separately.

A huge number of charities in the UK will have places in the London marathon if you raise a certain amount (think you generally need to raise a minimum of £2000). Not sure if you specifically need to be UK resident, but the charity might not care presuming you can raise the money. Full list here

There is a lot of debate about the London marathon and their link with charities. There was a Dispatches documentary on TV about it earlier this year.
