    Hi All!
I just wanted to vent a bit here and get whats been eating away it me for so long off my chest! Thanks in advance for listening-reading!
I am extremely paranoid about the fact that I have been laid off from my previous job. I am finding it near impossible to get another job and feel that when I tell interviewers I was laid off they take it as a mark against me. I take it against myself too and feel that it was because I was no good-although I was told otherwise and had good reviews. I just can't get passed it. I feel like I used to be a lot more confident career wise and this has just been shattered. I also feel like it puts me off studying any further and trying out different careers as I think I won't be able to do them. I am extremely upset every time i think of jobs and being laid off is the most sensitive subject for me. I just feel useless and this attitude is getting me nowhere at an alarming rate. I have started taking everything so personally.

Well op why did you get let go?
was it due to recession? cut-backs and all that?
or did you get the sack for something you did?

If you just got let go due to cut-backs. Dont worry about. Alot people in your boat. That wont effect your chances of getting a new job :)

Due to recession. Profits were down up to 40% in some areas this I know.
Was it something I did? I actually asked and they said no it wasnt anything I did but still in interviews when I say it, I cant help but think it was smthg I did or that potential employers look down on it despite the fact that it is a common occurance these days

These days it is almost expected that anyone going for interview has between laid off due to the recession so employers aren't going to think twice about it.

Jimmy is right. An interviewer expects quite a number of people going for a job to be unemployed these days. There is no stigma about being unemployed right now.

And as for thinking you did anything wrong?
Doubtful. When cuts need to be made. Someone has got to get the axe. That someone was you sadly.

We all think that the first to get the axe is the weak-link. Isnt always the case op. Alot times when one needs to be cut its the least favourite in the managers eyes or the one who only works a few hours a week. Or even just sometimes its just random "oh he'll do. sorry john have to let you go". Dont let it get you down op. Fact is you got let go. Thats enough that you need to know.

Personally on the subject. Thats why its foolish to be loyal with jobs. Too much cutbacks these days.

Op I got laid off. In a company 5 years, and basically all those at my level or below were told they were letting us go because there were just no further opportunities for us and they didn't need us.

I haven't had a single interview yet. In fact, I've had one response to one application, telling me I didn't fit the job they were looking to fill. Other than that - nothing back from anyone. It's only been 6 weeks admittedly, but I'm getting totally fed up and any self confidence I might have had is wilting rapidly.

Don't take it personally. There are so many people out there who are unemployed because business plummeted in so many industries. It's nothing against you personally.Employers don't look down on it - I think it means they can be really picky and get the best because there are so many out there unemployed - and unfortunately, they know it!! It's awful, and I understand your frustration, but it's not your fault.

I'm in a similar situation OP, it's so disheartening going for interviews and I get the same feeling as you that the interviewer attitude towards you changes when you tell them you were laid off, it's as if they assume you are a slacker or something.

In my situation I was laid off because of something somebody else done and when it was found out they blamed me, I should have checked over their work myself but had been working with them for years and they were normally very competent, we also had become fairly friendly so I wasn't expecting to be stabbed in the back.

It took me a few weeks but eventually between me pointing out big inconsistencies in their account of what happened, comparing my previous record too theres and insisting records of who was accessing what systems at the time of the incident were checked, it was realized the other person was at fault by the superiors and they were also let go however I didn't get my job back they hired somebody new.

Worry can be useful if it can have a positive outcome (e.g. worrying about your exam so you study harder), but in your case your worry has zero benefits. Nothing positive whatsoever can come out of it. In other words it is irrational worry.

You need to figure out a way to convince yourself of this. My own personal way of dealing with problems is to go for a long walk and discuss the issue by myself. I play the role of counsellor as well as me. So I talk about the problem and let the counsellor persona explain why I'm being silly and how I should change my way of thinking.

Be nice to yourself. There are companies who would like to have you on their team.
