I've always bought Dell but am wondering if there is better value out there at the moment.

I'm thinking I need something to compete with this Inspiron for €829

    Intel® Core™ i5-450M Processor (2.4 GHz,3M)
    Inspiron N7010 Order - Ireland
    17.3" WLED High Definition + (1600 x 900) TFT Display with TrueLife™
1.3 Mega pixel Integrated Web Camera
    4096MB 1333MHz Dual Channel DDR3 SDRAM [2x2048]
320GB (5,400rpm) Serial ATA Hard Drive
    1GB ATI Mobility Radeon™ HD 5470

    or this Studio for €899

    Genuine Windows® 7 Home Premium 64bit- English
    Intel® Core™ i5-450M (2.4Ghz, 4 Threads, turbo boost up to 2.66 GHz, 3M cache)
    17.3” High Definition+ (1600x900) LED with TL
    4096MB 1067MHz Dual Channel DDR3 SDRAM [2x2048]
320GB (7,200rpm) Serial ATA Hard Drive
Primary 6-cell 56 WHr Lithium Ion battery
1GB ATI Mobility Radeon™ HD 5650 Graphics Card

Since I've always been a bit of a Dell fanboy, what else it out there? Sony, HP, Toshiba.

My priorities are the 17" screen and very good gaming capabilities.

well i was selling this for 600 but i only have it for two more days :( would have been perfect for your needs as gaming laptops are not cheap

1GB ATI Mobility Radeon™ HD 5470 will not be adequte for good gaming. Aim for the HD 5650 or GT330M and above to comfortably play new games on medium to high settings.

sorry my bad this crappy desktop has actually got a 4 series low end card :) but seriously anything below a 5770 on a desktop is generally crap so i cant imagine a 5470 being any good

Well you cant really compare desktop cards to laptop cards.

As i said the 5650 would be the minimum card id look for if i wanted to do medium gaming. However for a 17inch screen much better options are available.

Thie simple fact of the matter is those machines are not gaming rigs. Id be more inclined to look at the MSI GX range, Kolbolt, Sager etc.

Its in the title, €800 :)

I'm not looking for blinding gaming performance. Enough to play any of the latest games at reasonable performance.

your looking for a solution thats hardly achieved at your budget :) laptops tend to always slow down after a 30 mins to 1hr use in gaming and start freezing. The only ones come into my mind is alien ware but its out of your budget.

Not necessarily, just clean the cooler every few months and elevate it when in game, shouldnt overheat. The lads and I lan a bit and its older games generally but most of us have sh1t laptops that are working hard. Once cleaned we had no crashes from excess heat.

It really is amazing how much dust can build up in 6 months though, especially for women(powderised makeup) from the machines I've opened.

To be honest, either of those laptops will do you, if you're willing to play at 640x480(or whatever the equivilant widescreen res is), but not at a decent resolution. You're not going to get a good gaming laptop for current games, never mind something futureproofed, for 800 squids... to be honest you'd be looking at a desktop for that. If it's for LAN's, what about a small box? one DVD drive, a 2.5" HD, 4GB ram, i5 processor and a decent GPU would set you back about 600 quid if you built it yourself in a mATX case with a mATX mobo... if that'd suit it's an option, otherwise somethings gotta give-either budget or requirements.

Alienware are beefed up dells, heavy price tags. They're the gaming stream, so you have insipron < Studio < studioXPS < alienware... Laptops are the same as desktops in that they slow down when they overheat, so if properly ventilated(get a laptop stand) they won't slow down, they'll stay at the temp they start at... or they should. There's plenty of gaming brands out there, a quick google will give them to you. ASUS and MSI would be where I'd look before alienware... Take a look at this link, didn't read it but it's recent

the second one is better, would run your games at good settings, mine laptop only has a 230m (nvidia) and runs mw2 at the native res at 40-60 fps
