Don't know what to do

    Hi,

Well I guess this isn't the most serious issue on the scale of things, but it's bothering me nonetheless. I'm a 24 year old woman and I can honestly say I don't know what I want to do with my life. This is really getting to me and leaving me feeling quiet deflated. I am intelligent and generally succeed at most things I put my mind to, it's just killing me that I don't have this plan lilke a lot of people who say that's what I want to do and work towards it. I've a decent well paying job and have a Higher Cert from a college course I did. I've applied to do a Marketing degree course part time, but am second guessing myself again saying what if you don't like it, what if you want to do something completely different. I suppose I always had this idealistic notion that I would finish college first time round with my degree, do my travelling get a great job and live happily ever after, how naive I know. Does anyone else feel this way as it's actually making me feel like a bit of a loser.

OP, there's nothing unusual about your situation and it certainly doesn't make you a loser. I'm in the exact same position at the moment.

I got a good LC, went straight to college, after my degree, straight into a job and a further 2 years until I got a very good professional qualification. However, 7 years on, I've decided that my career is completely wrong for me. Truth be told, it was never right and I was looking for ways out for a couple of years. So, I'm going back to college to take a completely different path. My wife, parents and siblings all think it's the best thing for me to do this. I've absolutely no regrets, everything I've done in life has taken me to where I am now which is a good place, and hopefully I'll be in an even better place from a personal satisfaction perspective in 5 years.

It's impossible at 17 to know what direction you'll want your life to take for the next 40-45 years. Something that can seem right at 20 might not suit your lifestyle or interests anymore by the time you're 25. It's no big deal. I hope you find satisfaction in whatever path your life takes you. Best of luck.

OP, I'm 27, out of college 5 years and I haven't a notion what I want to do with my life.

It's a total cliche, but there it is. I've been working until recently, have a good qualification, good job etc. Before I was let go I didn't know where I was going with the whole career thing, and now I'm redundant it's got worse rather than better! I like my qualification, which is fine, but it's one which allows me a certain amount of flexibility and I don't know where to turn next (complicated by the scarcity of jobs everywhere).

I always thought I'd qualify, work for a bit and go and live abroad (ie, work and live abroad, not "travel" around X no. of continents) for a couple of years before coming back here and settling down with my OH. As it turns out, I qualified, worked for 5 years and bought a house in the middle of those 5 years.I'm pretty happy and there's nothing stopping us going to live abroad yet, but I'm no closer to knowing what I want to do...

Anyway, point being, life never works out as you plan and you're totally normal. No matter what you do in life you'll think to yourself "what am I doing, what if I don't like it". I find those who know exactly what their goals and plans are tend to be in the minority. There is no "right" answer...there's a number of choices and you pick one (or two as the case may be) and make the best of them you can. If it doesn't work out, it's not the end of the world. In your case, you'll have a qualification out of it. And what's stopping you from travelling?? If it's what you really want to do, you'll make it your business to do it.

Good luck with whatever you choose.

Do a business studies degree instead. You'll learn marketing and lots of other subjects and can then decide which one you're really interested in.

Thanks Nolanger the course i've applied for is Marketing and Event Management. I did a course with PR first time round so the Event Management will tie in with that, and I enjoyed Marketing in college before.
