Replacing a 96 trooper at the moment and can't make my mind up between these three. It will be doing a slight bit of towing and a lot of off roading in various different conditions. It will either be 06 or 07 the head is telling me to go for the landcruiser a friend said the new discos are crap off road and everything is electronic which is bound to fail. To be honest tho he preclaims to be an expert in everything so I take his advise with a pinch of salt.

    Any advise gratefully welcomed

Well 07 land cruisers give injector problems. Both the disco and cruiser are permanent 4wd so they are harder to run than a rear wheel drive pajero on the road. The pajero has the best 4wd system. You have 2h for on road. 4h for off road which you can swap between while moving at up too 62mph.then you have 4hlc for rougher off roaring which is the centre diff locked.something the cruiser and disco don't have. Then you have 4llc which has really short gear ratios for crawling through the rough stuff.and if your really stuck you can lock the rear diff. Something Irish spec cruisers don't have or discos as far as I know. So if your doing alot of offloading you really can't beat the pajero. The 3.0 td common rail in the pajero is bullet proof and the most powerfull of the 3 as far as I'm aware.I would avoid the disco because of airbag problems that cost a fortune to fix.test drive the 3 the cruiser won't have an arm rest.

Jumping to the defence of the Disco (well I am biased!), Disco airbags are cheap to replace but it's the pump that isn't when owners fail to sort a leaky airbag. Discos are probably the most capable off road but as said rely heavily on electronics to do it (Terrain Response, now being copied by other manufacturers). Permanent 4wd over parttime 4wd doesn't make a lot of difference on the road when it comes to pushing a two and a half ton brick through the air. Cruisers and Disco do have centre difflocks or viscous couplings and low range gears.

Depends what you want, old fashioned 4wd and Jap reliabilty (well mostly) or a more modern comfortable 4wd (Discovery 3/4 are very reliable these days with a superb engine).

    Can't comment on the paj.

Judging from the issues I had with my RRS, I would advise to stay away from LandRover.

I'm back in a cruiser right now. 2000 100 series. Excellent machine - love it. But at over 100k, the new model is well out of my comfort range.

As 535 says, the 120's are throwing engines due to injector problems manifesting in blocked pickups in the sump. Boom. Easy enough to fix though and shouldn't put you off. The 120 is a great machine too imo.

    Good hunting !

It's hardly standard on the Paj though, is it?

Pajero doesn't have a rear diff-lock as standard from the factory and it has a 3.2 litre non-common rail direct injection engine.

Thanks for all the advice guys I finally bitten the bullet and went for it. Bought a 07 pajero 84000 miles for €13000 pretty happy with it the landcruisers seemed to be way over priced.

Pajero isnt going to be great for offroad with the monocoque chassis!

Rubbish. Chassis type has sod all to do with off road ability.

Suspension type/layout/transmission type etc is where the details are.

Edited to add that Pajeros have an anecdotal reputation for being "soft" in terms of mechanical reliability, however many have had great service from them.

So the monocoque chassis wont flex?

Mitsubishi gearboxes are soft, as are pajero sport brake discs and l200 pajero sport clutches.

there were a Gaggle of people at the Farm this weekend, Our farm is in the Dividing Ranges, the Road in is Dirt, it has Rained all month, the Causeways are flooded, heres a synopsis

Pajero - abandoned after Spinning on one of the steepest Inclines
Discovery - Driver chickened out after a (admittedly Hairraising) Downhill slide
Subaru Forrester - Excellent road holding, but not enough Ground clearance for the Causeways
Mercedes ML - OK Vehicle, Driver Problems
100 Series Cruiser, Slid into tree (slowly)

60 Series Landcruiser - Mine - Used to Ferry people about all weekend ;)
