Rent Relief & Service charges

    Hi,

    Just 2 quick questions.

    1. Anybody know how much you have to earn in a year or how much tax you need to pay to be able to claim rent relief?
I was working for 6 months in 2009 (January - June) and paid quite a bit of tax. But I didnt work from July-December. I was renting at the time and want to claim rent relief back on it. But do I need to have earned over a certain amount or paid a certain amount of tax?
I know that e.g. students or part-time workers cant claim it because their tax credits are larger than their earnings. I had a look on revenue.ie & other boards.ie posts but cant really find out anything about it!

    2. Also, can I claim 'Tax relief on service charges' for an apartment?
I paid the service charges (e.g. bin charges etc) related to my apartment for a few years. I paid the landlord and he paid the managment company directly. I have receipts to prove it. It seems to me that I can claim €80 per tax year but if I didnt pay the managment company directly does this matter? Also does it matter if it is a private managment company?

Any help would be greatly appreciatated. Many thanks.

There is no earning requirement to claim rent relief. If you go to the following site (http://www.revenue.ie/en/tax/it/credits/rent-credit.html), it will explain how to claim rent credits. You can ask for it to be back-dated, and if you are lucky, they might even give you some tax back from last year.

As far as I understand, you can only claim the tax credits for charges actually incurred, as opposed to nominal or fixed charges. As the actual charges were paid by the management company, you would not be able to claim them back. (I am, however, open to correction on this).

I total, I would contact the Revenue office directly, and they should be able to advise you on the phone, and generally process a lot of the paperwork then.
