I hear there is supposed to be a background story of the cloverfield movie, anyone know it?

There are several theories as to the origins of the monster. My favourite one and the one which I remember is the Cthulu mythos origin. In the second movie, if it gets made they apparently said that they'll go into more detail about it, I doubt the cthulu mythos angle will be adopted, probably the generic sci fi alien/lost lifeform story will be used instead.

At the time of the movies release there was a huge viral campaign on the net for it. One of the characters in the movie wears a Slush-o T-Shirt ( a fake brand name which appeared in previous JJ Abrhams creations like Alias)

one of the movie stills was of the guy with the T-Shirt this led to people googling Slush-O which led them to a fake website which had the back story via cartoon that due to mankind dumping crap in the ocean it created a monster.

Another theory was that in the final clip of the movie

where the guy & his girl are on the train and you can see out over the ocean that something can be seen crashing into the water in the background implying it was dropped into the ocean or came from outer space?

...I never saw that though I'm sure wiser internet gurus have slowed down the footage etc.

The new movie is called Super 8 and is set in the 1970s AFAIK
A similar viral campaign exists for this movie but I've never looked at it in depth as Cloverfield

I liked Cloverfield alot. It was rather tense in parts.

There is a Manga comic series that acts as a prequel of sorts that was given the go ahead by Abrams to act as canon.
