Plumbing query - location of hot press from stove?

    Hi

Need some help. Currently in process of finalising design of my house.
Is the location and distance of my hot press from my stove something I need to be considering i.e closer the better? Hot Press is at the moment proposed to be located upstairs (storey and a half house) beside an ensuite bathroom and above main ground floor bathroom and master bedroom ensuite but is located approx 15m from living room stove, is this too far to be effective? My plan is to use turf/sticks in stove and heat the majority of rads in house biggest end of time but also to have back up of oil/wood pellet burner for mornings etc. any help or advice would be greatly appreciated?

When you are counting on natural circulation, the closer the better. I have always used a 25ft rule. Longer distances should still work but will take a lot more energy to heat cylinder and radiators.

thanks for the reply, when you say natural circulation, i assume that the alternative is a pumped system right?

The stove will have to be natural circulation to the cylinder, from there it is pumped to the radiators.

cheers for your help. i have no re-arranged layout. one last question...wat is the standard or typical size of a cylinder in diameter? altho i'm presuming there are variations?

Look at the piping in totality here and just dont focus on the stove to cylinder run.

You can do the math as to the extra heat required to heat 15m by 2 by 0.5 *( 0.022 * 0.022)* 3.14 by 4.12
    see here: http://www.engineeringtoolbox.com/water-thermal-properties-d_162.html

however there is no water loss here whereas if you have the cylinder close to the stove and long runs from cylinder to bathrooms u waste water and heat on the hot circuits unless u have a 2 pipe circulation system where u only waste heat.

where is the expansion pipe for the stove going?

if the expansion pipe is short then I would be happy with a circ pump on the 15m run and keep the bathroom water runs short..
How do u propose not having the stove and the 30m of pipe to cylinder as a rad when oil on: the expansion pipe needs to be free of NRV's etc
