NCT tomorrow - wait around or go back to work?

Have my NCT tomorrow and I've read that the test time varies.. from 20 minutes to an hour.

Should I wait around the test centre while it goes through it, or make my way back to work?

Although in saying that - I don't exactly have a viable lift back to work, or to the test centre.

Sligo NCT is usually pretty much on time and I've never had a test take one hour.

You're better off waiting ..you'll only be waiting for your keys and cert if you were to come back later, reception isn't always manned, they take turns between tests.

By the time you were back at work it'd be time to leave again to go to the centre.

Cheers lads. I'd say that'd be best alright.

Here's hoping it'll pass but my front left wheel bearing is dodgy.

For mine, I arrived 25 minutes early and they started almost immediately, was finished at the time I was due to start.

I had my NCT a few weeks ago, arrived about 20 minutes early and was gone by the time it was actually meant to start!

Well.. I failed, but at least I failed for cosmetic stuff with no charge for re-test - and just bring it up next chance I get.

Ha, both brake lights not working (they were both working at weekend, and I saw one was working when the car pulled in...to the test lane - don't know what they did to "brake" [pun and poor spelling intended] both).

Also my local Esso's jet car wash wore off some of the EU flag with 'IRL' on the rear license plate. So I've to get a new rear license plate (are NumberPlates.ie any good?). Thanks Esso!

Also I couldn't remove the hubcaps. They're glued on..

Still.. no re-test, no charge. Am happy with that!

PS - was waiting about 30 minutes give-or-take.. although christ, it was a long 30 minutes!

Bring a paper. Longest I waited was 40 mins (emissions issue, he was on the thing 10mins) so had time to go get a sandwich in Centra, eat it there and go back.

Personally I wouldnt leave my car unattented after a test, anytime Ive brought my car its always left unlocked outside, despite it having central locking and requiring a simple button press on the key to lock.

Clear out your car of anything valuable and it'll be alright..

Just print of the EU flag with IRL and glue or celotape it on, or even better print onto a sticky label. No need to replace a number plate.

How would you change a flat tyre with glued on hub caps?

Ah sure.. I'll fork out the €8 or so on NumbersPlates.ie for a new one. Can't imagine they'll be difficult to replace.

Yeah, I'm sure they'll be removable with a bit of force.. but when I got new tires, the hubcaps were glued on by the mechanic (as opposed to using cable ties, which were on them!) :(

Brought my car for its NCT last thursday. Tester says, 'dont go away, this wont take long'. It took 12 minutes!
I was the last of the day and as the other testers finished their tests they came to help my man. Passed without a bother and practically chased out the door:D. Those boys were in a big hurry!

Last time I did it he left the car outside with the key in the ignition, I guess he figured it wasn't worth robbing!

If he did that then he's a real twit, sound's like you'll need to get a screw driver or nail bar at them. Are your wheel trims really loose or something?

FYI, if you move to a 'smart' meter electricity plan, you CAN'T move back to a non-smart plan.

You don't have to take a 'smart' meter if you don't want one, opt-out is available.

Buy drinks in 3L or bigger plastic bottles or glass bottles or cartons to avoid the DRS fee.

It does mention on the NCT booklet under rules that:

Note the bit where it says "only in the case where the wheel nuts are not visible". So will this be sufficient I wonder are the wheels nuts are now visible..

    there alloys,
did they fail you for not removing the centre caps on the alloys?
    where they glued on?

Yes, that'll do them. Nothing more you can remove for them.

The wheel nuts/bolts have to be visible - most alloys dont have centre caps, but if they do, they have to come off.

What about the glue? Never heard of that before.

I'll be perfectly honest and say "hubcaps, alloys?" - can't say I know the difference!

No, they weren't glued on. The centre caps popped off with a screw-driver.. they failed me on that.

As far as I know, the actual alloys are glued on, but the centre caps popped out.

As long as the removal of the center cap will do them and I don't need to remove the actual alloy, then I'm happy!
