Hi all . Just a quick one

I havn't been driving my car for a while , I was trying to sell so it was parked up without tax & long story short it didn't sell and i'm looking to retax it

It has been parked on a main road so will have been picked up by them new cameras the gardai are using on the patrol cars ,

Will this cause complication if i state i havn't been using it on the tax form ?

    1. On the declaration you state that car wasn't used by you or with your consent in a public place.

As seems to be logical, if car was parked, it means it wasn't used.

So I'd say you are stating the truth.

    2. What kind of new cameras in garda cars are you saying about? Tell me it's a joke.

If the car is in a public place (the side of the road) it must be taxed. It can only be kept untaxed if held in a private location like a driveway or your own land/ buildings.

ANPR(Automatic number plate recognition) cameras, lots of garda cars have them a good while now

    We all know that.
Question was, if OP can safely sign a no use declaration.
In my opinion he can, because only what he have to state there, is that he wasn't using the car.

OK, but you are not trying to tell me, that they just drive around and scan every single numberplate seen on the way, just to check all of them for motortax.

How does the car get to be parked in the public place? Airlifted?

Doesnt matter anyway. It cant be IN a public place, actually moving or driving it doesnt make a difference.

Using the defence of "This guy on the internet, CiniO, reckons I didnt use it so you cant do me" wont get you far.

The car automatically ( hence the "A") checks every reg it encounters and flashes up on screen if something is amiss. So yes, they do scan every plate seen along the way and check them for motor tax (aswell as being stolen etc)

Could be parked while it had a valid tax, which expired later (when the car was already parked).

I absolutely agree. That are the rules.

Of course they can do him for not having tax on a car parked in a public place. But first they would have to actually get a proof.

Question in this thread was actually about something completely different.
He asked if he can sign a no use declaration without putting himself on risk of being accused of giving a false declaration.
I just explained, that he can sign it.

If they find out, that car was parked on public place, they can do him for not having a motor tax. That's the offense that he already commited. He didn't ask about it. He knows that he can be prosecuted for it.
What he was asking, if he can be done for giving false declaration.
And the answer is: no, he can't. Because what he's actually declaring is truth.
