my housemate was doing civil eng last year and it was about 32-35 hours/week including labs and all iirc for first year.

is that a lot relative to other courses??

well last year i had about 20-25 hours/week for undenominated science but i wasn't doing as many subjects as my housemate.
take it like this, you'll roughly be in from 9-5 (with 1-2 off) so that's roughly 35 hours/week. but your labs will never run for the full time allocated (unless one week is hard) so for a 3 hour lab, you might be finished after 2.

for most engineering courses you will be pretty much in college from 9 until 5 most days of the week... but when you finish in 4 years time you will be fully qualified and wont have to go looking into post grads to get a job like you would in arts or alot of other courses...

its hard work... but worth it in the end... believe me ive just been through it and I will be accepting my degree already having a job this October

yeah i'm probably going to have to do a postgrad, but that's cos i want to teach so i'd need to do a HDip anyway.
but i've only 16 hours/week in total this year (including labs but not tutorials) so i don't really care :D

what engineering degree did you do out of interest? :)

Yeah engineering does have a very tough timetable but keep in mind,a lot of stuff we will learn must be showed to us where other course especially law expect you to do a lot of your own work.I'd say including lectures, labs etc and study time needed at home most course are roughly the same.

Yup, your gonna be in from 9 till 5. But that doesn matter cos youll have the whole evening off (most of them anyway...) unlike alot of other courses!

    What engineering you doing?

You'll usually be in college 9-4/5. Second is the more intense in terms of amount of subjects undertaken. Third year is shortened due to PEP (a placement with a company) and then it's smack, straight into final year.

Overall there's a hell of a lot more hours than other courses. Still it's worth it though.

Just heading into 2nd yr energy systems. :)

If ya go to the maths/chem tutorials too (which are genuinely very helpful) then you're touching on around 40 hours a week give or take.

You'll be jealous of your friends in arts with their 8 hour timetable for the 1st month or so but in general you won't notice the longer days at all.

Oh and I hope you love all those nice early starts @ 9am! :P

Theres no harm getting up at 8 for college really. Gets you used to the real world :-)

Or you could be like everyone else and not go in!

Or, wobbles, we could be like you and not show up at all ;)

It's kinda true that you don't notice the hours after a while, you're just in college all day every day and that's it. Plus you end up hanging around with lots of engineers who are in the same boat.

2nd year is a tough one, lots of projects, lots of hours, but the hours start to ease off in 3rd and 4th year (even if the projects don't!)

No harm when ya don't come in smellin' of whiskey!:pac:

Yes Engineering is a tough course at times but it was mostly enjoyable over the four years!
