Hi all, I recently ordered two pairs of vans off etsy.com and they came from America...and totalled about 115e or so incl delivery. However the postman arrived today and said I wasn't getting them until I paid the customs duty....which is 63e...i can't see how that can be right?? Anyone any ideas?

You should have be provided with an invoice.

What value was stated on the package?

    The calculation is usually:

    1. Value of Goods inc Postage (VOG) + Duty (D) = VOG_D

    2. VOG_D + VAT (V) = VOG_D_V

    3. VOG_D_V + Handling Fee (HF) = VOG_D_V_HF

    4. VOG_D_V_HF - VOG = Amount Payable

Allowing 10% for Duty (guesstimate), 21% for VAT and €10 for handling (guesstimate) then that comes to -

    1. €115 + €11.5 (10%) = €126.5

    2. €126.5 + €26.50 (21%) = €153

    3. €153 + €10 (HF) = €163

    4. €163 - €115 = €48 payable

Customs Duty on Footwear can be as high as 17% depending on material they are made of and is based on Invoice Value plus shipping and the duty amount is added to calculate the Vat.

    As per the previous post:

If you applied 17% Customs then the amount payable would be circa €57.

This is assuming the Handling Fee is only €10. It could be more.

Should be no duty, the limit is now €150, went up a year or so ago. You still pay VAT and the handling charge (my mates handling charge was about €6.50 recently)

Duty is still on some items under €150 but no runners.

    3. Consignments of Negligible Value

Consignments not exceeding an intrinsic value of €150 may be imported without payment of Customs Duty, while consignments not exceeding a total value of €22 may be imported without payment of VAT. (Intrinsic value is the value of the goods alone, and does not include insurance and freight.) However, it should be noted in particular that there is no relief (from Customs Duty, VAT or Excise duty) under this negligible value provision for importations of tobacco, tobacco products, alcohol products, perfumes or toilet waters irrespective of their value.

It could be their mistake, or the supplier could have made a mistake or put a very high insurance value on them or something. I would ring them to get the breakdown and fix the probable mistake. The other (unlikely) possibility is they did not believe the stated value and put their own value on, this is usually ipods declared as €10 though, yours sounds fine.

    Good to know.

I recieved a pair of basketball boots from Eastbay delivered by UPS and they had a customs charge which we paid. When we opened the box the boots were wrong so we e-mailed Eastbay and the arranged for UPS to collect the boots.Yesterday they arrived with the replacements but this had also a customs charge. When we contacted the revenue the said they would give us back the first payment.
