Thinking about purchasing something along the lines of the above. E Class that newer shape one.

    A few questions though.

Is there any known problems with them that you know of that I should check.

When does the timing belt and water pump get changed on this model so I know when I'm looking at milage when it should have been done.

Other than the normal stuff anything I should be watching out for??

    Cheers.

Check for any electric probles - any warning lights on the dashboard especially. Service history should also be looked at.
Mercedes does not have timing belt (chain istead), so that is one problem less to worry about.

timing chain. Fantastic that is one less thing to worry about right enough.

As for the dashboard lights. Does this model have any really known issues that pop up that I should look for in the service history. Or any other fault/problem that I should be aware of.

    cheers.

Someone mentioned above there to watch out for electrical problems.

Other than warning lights and looking at service history and of course testing every button in the car is there any other tell tale signs of electrical problems. Probably not. Just thought I'd ask.

There is a decent website called honest johns that had a great database of most every car and a list if know faults and pros and cons. I can't tab over to find it right now as I'm on my mobile but I think it's at honestjohns.co.uk or something similar

Isn't that more expensive than buying here even before VRT?

    Indeed!!

I'm living in Holland ... even after BPM i'd make a saving, plus you get a better spec.

I sold my 00 reg skoda and i'm regretting it now ! :( .. The steering wheel on the wrong side was no big deal.

Paid 9500 for a 2005 Volvo V50 with 160,000km on it !! and thats not really a rip off, other dealers were looking for 11-12k

Holland is a f*cking rip off

Couple that with the 1246 / year in road tax, It irritates me when people go on about Ireland being a rip off for cars.

Radiator combines cooler for transmission. Coolant can leak between compartments and contaminates the transmission fluid.

This only applies for certain Valeo radiators. More here:

Nice engine indeed but it tends to eat its own fuel lines.

The supporting ribs that go from one side of the engine cover to the other are so sharp that a fuel pipe that is very close to it gets sliced over time. 2nd time since we got the car 4 years ago that its happened.

Worth checking it out if you own one. The engine cover has two pieces, its the right hand one as you look into the engine bay from the front.

Germany is as bad. I looked at a few german websites for a top end Audi thinking I would get a bargain. It turned out to be way way dearer than here....:o

if it has parking sensors fitted check if they work , they seem to stop working at the slightest tip off a pole in mercs

That's a very strange thing, as in germany they don't have any special taxes or duties on cars, unlike in the Netherlands. New Cars are cheaper in germany, but for some reason used cars holding their values incredible well, and they go for crazy money.

timing chain and tensioner needs to be replaced regularly on the 1.8 petrol,no set interval but I'd say 5 years/100,000km

thats because the connector at the back of the sensor gets crushed/damaged quite easily, the sensors are rarely damaged

ok were do we start........timing chains are a big problem on 1.8 (271 engine)
first thing id do if it was mine is change the chain and tensioner regardless of miles! it WILL stretch and eventually jump and bend valves!! roughly e500 to prevent.e2500 to cure!!ECM trouble, SBC braking system give trouble, They Eat rear pads 2:1 front. Front arms,a few usual merc electrical probs.... But and it is a big but dont let it put you off ,looked after and they are a nice car. my advice is bring somone who knows these cars when u buy and factor in the poss costs to prevent the big bills.
