Anyone know where I would get a map of ireland with all the major roads on it and possible rail lines too? I have tried google - but none of them are any good.

Any good bookshop should stock them. Check out Easons because I think they have plenty.

OpenStreetMap + Mspaint would be my best suggestion. Use the "Print Screen" key to take a screenshot at a point of interest in an OSM map to the Clipboard.

no idea, I'm sure there's info on the OSI site somewhere.

    Jebus, no, don't do that!

Much better to use the Export tab, with that you can export any area you wish at quite high resolutions, or indeed as SVG, which Illustrator will handle very nicely.

Incidentally, don't forget that the OSM licence requires that you attribute the source.

Since others have mentioned the OSI site - there is indeed some good mapping on there, but it won't be legal for you to help yourself to a copy for your own purposes.
