Devil is the first of three movies from producer M. Night Shyamalan's The Night Chronicles Trilogy and will be directed by John Erick Dowdle (Quarantine).

I know that M. Night Shyamalan is pretty much universally loathed after his last two flops, The Happening & The Last Airbender, but since he is only producing these movies and leaving the directing to somebody else does anyone thing that they might turn out to be decent movies or will it be more of the same crap that we usually get from this guy?

    "the Night Chronicles"

ughhhh, talk about self serving gash. That guy disappeared up his own hole a long time ago, Unbreakable is fantastic, and his other movies have their moments, but he just needs to stop promoting everything as "from the mind of", it just sounds pretentious beyond belief.

There's only one man who gets away with putting his name before the title of all his films and thats John Carpenter. :D
    M. Night Shyamalan's involvement, however little, is enough to put me off this film.

Or Eli Roth. That's the best indication that I should keep well clear of the film.

Fully agreed. The man is single handedly destorying the horror genre!

It's only crime was it wasn't in English, and some people 'don't watch movies to read'

Was in Cineworld the other day and they showed this trailer backwards. WAsn't sure if taht was done on purpose or not. :o

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,721 ✭✭✭Otacon

When I went to see The Expendables recently, the trailer for this played beforehand. [No it wasn't backwards]

You know when you get that sense that the rest of the audience was really into it? Well, this was happening and I could hear some 'Wow', 'Look's good' comments from some others.

As soon as, and I mean the very second, that 'From the mind of M. Night Shyamalan' came up on screen, there was a collective groan! He is movie-poison at this stage!

Definitely not defending Shave-my-lawn here but the only thing I would offer is that whether these titles are his call or not, even if he took no interest studios would, just because his first two films were brain benders he is forever lumped with the moniker of being the master of storytelling and a dab hand at twists whereas the reality of it is that he had two stories simmering for years then everything he's written under pressure has been fairly straightforward.

To be fair to this movie, M Night Shyamaladingdong is writing it, but not directing it. His movies do contain pretty good ideas, so as long as he steers clear of directing, it might be passable.

Eh he wrote Lady... and he wrote Happening... so I'm not sure if he is solid in his ideas! Still though this looks passable.

    That's the 2nd time I've heard that.

That's the problem with publicised twists - if you know there's an imminent twist, even if you have no idea what it is, you are subconsciously trying to figure it out for the duration of the movie and it hurts your enjoyment of the piece.

The mere knowledge that there is a twist is enough to spoil something these days as people become ever more adept at detecting what that twist may be. And twists are becoming symonomous with M. Night Schneleman... (I can't be bothered to look up the spelling tbh) The happening was bloody terrible - an hour and a half of people running from grass. I hope he's turned it around but I'm not holding my breath.

Apparently the distributors have been playing down M Night's involvement with this in the US, after audiences were bursting out laughing during the trailer when the 'from the mind of...' quote came up on screen.

    Thats true.

Now, on a side note. Am i right in saying that the twist in unbreakable
is that samuel L has caused a few disasters in the world in the hope of finding the unbreakable man. Is it not unbelievably lucky that he happened to find him???

Expect a twist at the end.

    They are already dead....
They're not actually in a lift....
    Its a dream....

I can actually see Ashton Kutcher running in at the end and screaming "Punk'd!"

I'm guessing the big twist as is with all M. Night Shyamalan's films
is that they are all dead and riding the elevator to heaven or hell

This next film in the series will be Reincarnated. I'm not too sure if it will be a sequel to Devil but the director & concept don't exactly fill me with joy I have to say.
    M. Night Shyamalan is reportedly attached to Reincarnate, the next thriller in the Night Chronicles banner.

Deadline report that The Last Airbender director will co-producing the project with Media Rights Capital.

The film follows a jury that are haunted by supernatural forces while trying to decide the fate of a man accused of murder.

Helmer Daniel Stamm (The Last Exorcism) will direct the upcoming supernatural film penned by Buried scribe Chris Sparling.

There was word of a sequel to Unbreakable too. But it would have nothing to do with David Dunn.

Please don't waste your time or money on this movie.
The most accurate way to describe my experience watching 'Devil' is.. 'meh'

    ..and oh
there is a 'twist' but it's pretty pathetic.

Its not that bad. Fairly decent in fact. I dont feel at all that it was a wasted 90 minutes.

Watched this the other night. Not as bad as I was expecting its about a 2.5 outta 5. Its not much in terms of horror but it did feel like an extended episode of the Twilight Zone. Less of the "den den den" music would have been appreciated.

To the film's credit, it doesnt have a cop out CGI crapfest at the end.

    Seen it tonight.

I liked it, very much so in fact.

I was expecting it to be junk, so was pleasantly surprised to find it to be engrossing.

It's far from a classic now, but after all the junk "horror" this past year, like Paranormal, The Last Exorcist etc etc, it was a surprise to finally see something worthwhile of that genre.

    One thing though ..
I don't think they should have revealed to us that the cop's wife and child were killed in a car accident until AFTER the guy talks about it.

Then we could just have seen the cop with his mouth open in shock that this guy was saying what he was about the accident in the flash back.

Then have the cop rip out the carwash coupon from his wallet to show the others what all this means to him.

Just thought that would have been a better way to edit it as to to have the cop talk about it they way he did and then we later see the guy in the crash, you can just see what's coming a mile off and it kinda spoils it.

    Good film.

Basic idea that only scratches the surface really. It is a decent film, but it should make you think, unfortunately it doesn't.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,432 ✭✭✭vasch_ro

i thought it was very good, it kept myself and my wife entertained and had some suspense/ thrills to it, certainly its better than a lot of the dross out there
I noticed the audience seemed very positive towards it and there were a good few collective gasps and sharp intakes of breath.
Looking forward to the next one.....

I thought it was grand. Didnt really think there was a twist at all. The story was good, movie was entertaining, not in the slightest bit scary though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,899 ✭✭✭grimm2005

Shocked that I actually pretty enjoyed this considering the name attatched. Maybe it's because he didn't direct. Didn't think it was amazing or anything but entertaining enough and worth the watch

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13,992 ✭✭✭✭gurramok

Thought it was a good whodunnit film. Maybe its just me but i thought the actors who played the terrified scenes were indeed good actors acting terrified :)

    Good film.

Completely agree, this was one of those twists that wasn't accompanied with all the bells and whistles that suggest "OMG this is the twist" but it was significant enough that when it happened I felt sort've cheated. As a run of the mill plot revalation it would've been fine but as a stand out twist it seemed contrived and came across as annoying.

All in all thought I really liked Devil, sheer proof that Shymalan should stay at the writers desk and it was great to see him dabble in the unsettling territory of The Sixth Sense once again and stop spreading himself so thin
