Does anybody know anything about the €500 book grant or help that people on social welfare get? I'm starting next week and I have very little money. I know some people that got it last year but they aren't around anymore.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

You have to apply for the Back to Education Allowance upstairs. There are three doors; one on left is the library, one on the right is the dole office, and the middle one is where you have to go. Apply on time (enquire there as to when to send in your application). When they have processed all the transitions from dole to Back to Ed. they start processing the €500 payment which now unfortunately is only €300 due to the recessionary cuts.
I did not get mine till middle of October. Not all people get it at the same time. It goes directly into your bank account with your Back to Ed payment.

As for the interview in GTI, they are looking to see how interested you are in completing the course, if you have any care experience (I didn't apart from minding my granny and younger brother and sisters), and how likely you are to complete the course. I suppose they want to have successful numbers complete the course.

I am now a second year nursing student in Canterbuy in the U.K. and I love my course. It is getting tougher as I go, but that is to be expected with the jump in levels every year. Over here, 1st yr is level 4, 2nd yr is level 5, and 3rd yr is level 6. There are loads of Irish students here in Canterbury. If you meet an Irish student in Canterbury, they are either a nurse or a teacher!!

Anyway, I hope this helps. If you have any more questions, please ask.
    :)

The 300 payment was removed in the last budget see this page http://www.citizensinformation.ie/en/social_welfare/social_welfare_payments/back_to_education/back_to_education_allowance.html
