Looking at a Renault Laguna

Hi, I am changing my car and was looking for something with good mpg and reliable. There seems to be a lot of Renault Laguna 1.9 diesels around with low mileage and good price. Never heard anything good about Renaults but saying that they have always been Meganes.

Whats the story with the Lagunas? Anyone have any experience with them?

I understand that they are more or less guarunteed trouble of some kind. That's not the end of the world in itself.

My philosophy is if you're waiting for your paycheck on a Tuesday, don't buy a Renault. If you're used to have a war chest of a few grand in the bank anyway and you are prepared to take the 'bigger' view and are prepared to put up with some hassle, then yes, they are great value and a pretty good all round product.

Any idea what kind of things go wrong with them. I hear it is mostly electrical but I wouldn't mind if it was a matter of changing a fuse every so often.

Someone on here posted a link to a german breakdown survey (ADAC I think), and according to it the new renaults are some of the most reliable cars you can buy. I think the old model megane had pretty much garunteed problems with window regulators and the like, but as you're buying new, I think you'r efairly safe going with a Renault.

I've been driving the same 1.8 litre 02 Laguna for almost 4 years and have had minimal issues with it.

The only thing I will say to watch out for is a known weakness in the suspension. I've had to replace both sides at the front of mine and when replacing the first of the two a couple of years ago, the mechanic mentioned that the part he was replacing looks to have been a replacement itself.

All cars are going to have issues unfortunately but for my own part, I'm very happy with the Laguna. It passed the NCT again on Saturday first time, without having to do anything in advance of it other than replace light bulbs and wiper blades, and I do a fair amount of mileage in it!

I assume your talking about laguna II's?early ones were the most troublesome ,but personally I'd still buy one. At the worst it was something like 3 2 faults per 100 which counts everything from a blown fuse to a blown engine as a fault so to say even the majority give trouble is wrong never mind all of them (for perspective , the transit of the same era had 2 or 3 more faults per 100 )

The facelifted 05- one fared much better reliability wise.

Yep I was looking 04 or 05 and they seem like a bargain. Nice size car and they look decent. Anyone know what kind of MPG the 1.9 diesels get. I don't rely on the stuff I find on the internet anymore after they telling me that I would get 50 mpg from my 2.2 Primera. Lucky to get 43 :( I do a lot of miles and need something that has good MPG

The good thing about the post facelift Laguna II is that it is generally reliable but used values are affected by the (somewhat undeserved) terrible reputation of the pre facelift car. So you should get a post facelift car for less than you'd pay for the same age Passat, Mondeo or Avensis. The Laguna is at least as reliable as those three and in many ways is a nicer car. A canny buy in other words.

Go for a post facelift car from 05-07. Be aware that there are a few pre facelift 05s and even 06s around.
