The default alarm clock on my iphone 4 doesn't work when the phone's turned off.

    Why is this?

I mean I set it for 8am this morning and turned it off before I went to sleep and woke up at 9:15 wondering why alarm hadn't woke me up.

I checked it again by resetting a new alarm for 5 mins time and switched it off only to have it go off when I switched it back on.

This is really a silly nuance tbh. Any alternative clocks to the default?

Nothing runs when the phone is off.

Didn't know that was the case! A strange one none the less.

Yep. Just put it on airplane mode everything else will be off and it won't do much to the battery...

Actually i had the same problem with my clock radio. I set the alarm carefully, then unplugged it. For some reason, it did not then go off!
I think it may be due to something in the area. For instance I turned off the fridge, and it ceased to keep my food cold.

Seriously though, When the iphone is fully turned off, it is fully off. Some other phones operate in a way that alarm can operate when phone is off. iphone cant wake the phone. As posted earlier, if people are calling you at night, turn it to silent or airplane mode.
Myself i never turn off the phone, and use a charging alarm clock for my phone .

Alarm doesn't work on Android phones either when phone is off. This is not the case for Nokia phones.

yep Nokia alarms work when the phone is off, in fairness it should be a standard feature.

I wonder though is the alarm seperate from the phone, or is the phone just on a low power standby rather then being off.

Well there should be a threshold that if the the phone falls below the alarm doesnt go off but this could be set pretty low i'd say.

Most other phones, to be fair to the OP, have had this functionality as standard for the last five years. However, I've never seen a smartphone which does this, it's usually only standard mobile phones. It doesn't use a low-power standby mode, it runs off the internal clock using battery power and then boots up the phone at the right time. Like the internal clock, the alarm won't work and will reset if the battery is disconnected.

Smartphones need to be thought of more as small laptops with a phone attached, as opposed to just being fancy mobile phones.
