Hello - newish to running and back on track again after few months break.
Was MAD for a run(4k) tonight and didnt have patience for rain to stop.
Off I went - actually enjoyed it! Nice and cooling..probably would have been easier if I had a damn snorkle as downpour mid run and no where to hide...
So the trainers are stuffed with newspaper...clothes in the washer/dryer..
Should I get a cap for running in the rain?
And must invest in wind/rain breaker as was soaked in my chest area(had only cheap wind breaker on)..
My ears were water logged so had to dry out my mini ipod earphones - probably a hat will stop that happenng agin
Am I mad?? Do other people enjoy running in the rain? Probably wouldnt run again in such heavy rain...

    Sorry, couldn't resist.

Running in the rain is great - keeps you cool, reminds you that sanity is overrated. I have the same problem with ipod headphones, I just learn to live with it. A hat and coat that are thick enough to keep you dry from the rain will be so thick they make you sweat more, making you wet all over again. If it's not so cold or so wet or your runs so long that you're going to get sick, why worry?

what do you do with your used running gear on a Non-wet day?:)

Btw way, i'm just back from a very wet LSR, tech t shirt and shorts as usual this time of year.

This time of year, just wear your regular gear, it's still very mild.
Maybe a cap but that's just personal preferance.

    Get's a bit more complicated in Nov/Dec.

What makes life hard running in the rain?
Get a baseball cap and that'll keep rain out of your eye's other then that you can dry off when you get home.

Running in the rain is just fine :)

Life is easier when running in the rain. You have the parks to yourself (owners don't want soggy smelly dogs), nobody on the footpaths to block your way, a natural cooling mechanism, and if you wear a head torch at night, the sky is illuminated with millions of tiny fireworks. Bliss... :)

    Some tips:
Choose your clothes wisely. Soggy clothes get quite heavy.
Body glide on potential chaff areas (more likely to chaff in wet soggy clothes)
Put your mp3 player into a plastic bag (I've killed 5 in the last 12 months, though some were resurrected from the dead).
Jump in the puddles like you just don't care.
Smile - these are the good times.

ou have the parks to yourself

The Phoenix Park was absolutely empty yesterday evening, was a huge contrast compared to how busy it has been over the last few months.

Only one more tip that i can add to all of the above that i found very helpful in the Cork city marathon where it lashed from start to finish and that was to rub Vaseline into my eyebrows. It diverts the water from running into your eyes, also very helpful on a hot day to protect your eyes from sweat. This tip from someone with bushy eyebrows

Jump in the puddles like you just don't care.

This is one of the best things about running in the rain.

Another is going to the park after a heavy rainfall and sloshing around in big, muddy, messes. :D

And follow the lady in the tight running gear, the rain makes it look better ;)

Rain won't melt u, not unless u are an ice-cream ;) It separates the runners from the fair weathers anyway and as said parks and paths are a lot quieter! :)

I always wear a cap because I find sweat dripping into my eyes distracting or it stings (I must consume a lot of salt but I don't know where). I realise it makes me sweat a bit more but it soaks up a lot.

In rain I find that the cap keeps the rain out of my eyes and face so it makes the rain feel less. It's a psychological thing that.

I recently bought a Nike cap in Arnotts for 15 euro. Working good.
I used to have a great Zoot cap but left it on a plane. CSS have the 2009 one on special. 20 euro for 2010 model.

I wear a cap, it keeps the worst of the rain out of your eyes, but in high winds, its a nuisance as it gets blown off. :) Dont wear a windbreaker, youll just sweat under it. Let yourself get wet, in this season thats ok, only in the dead of winter is it a problem, and even then I avoid waterproofs.

Tight clothes are better than loose, in the rain. Though -ahem- you may get followed by strange men, see above.

Change your clothes the minute you stop, so you dont chill.
