Putting a new born baby in a cot

    Hi folks,

I hope someone might be able to advise on this. I have a cot at home and was wondering if, when a baby is born and taken home, it's ok to put them straight into a cot to sleep? Must you use a crib or moses basket for a newborn? I know that the foot-to-feet method should be used but Im not sure if a newborn can be put into a cot. I don't want to purchase a moses basket or crib if I don't need one but I obviously will if it's a case of having to and there is a safety element involved.

    Thanks a mill,
    Rosen

There are a lot of different baby sleep positioners that are supposed to be good. My brother and his wife used them with my nephew, it meant that they could safely put him to sleep on any flat surface (sofa, their bed, large cot etc.) without worrying about him rolling or moving and ending up in a position he shouldn't be in.

In terms of bedding all my friends with babies swear by babygro bags or baby sleeping bags for the first year or more.

You can put a newborn into a cot yes, you don't need anything special.

They say that babies like moses basket/cribs because they feel more secure in them. I found when I put my baby in cot at about 7/8 weeks she looked lost but slept better as she was at stage where she loved stretching. Its totally up to you though! But its not necessary for them to be in moses basket its just handy as you can have them sleep downstairs and then just carry it upstairs when u go to bed

The contented little baby book actually recommends putting a newborn into a cot to save any anxiety later on with the transition from crib/moses basket to cot. They grow out of the cribs so fast that they really are a waste of money, but they do look really cute!

Megan grew out of her crib in 5 weeks and if I'd known then what I know now I wouldn't have bothered!

The gro-bags/sleeping bags are great. TK Maxx always have a great selection for around 15 Euro. You'll pay anything from 30 Euro up to around 50 Euro in Mothercare/Mama's and Papa's etc...

If you are going to use one, they are not recommended until your baby is around the 9lb mark as they may be so tiny that they can slip down into the sleeping bag. Once your baby is big enough to sleep in one, it isn't necessary to have your baby with its feet at the foot of the cot, this is only necessary when you are using blankets as your baby can slip down and cover its face with the blanket.

My boys went straight into cots when we came home from hospital. Just put their feet down at the end and that was it.

i have to agree with this! my girl slept from 7 to 7 every night since she was born and the minute we transferred her to the cot she woke up every two hours for a feed or cause she spat her soother out and wouldnt stop crying til she got one of them, tried everything-blankets, growbags, extra warm pjs, changed diet habits, nap times, everything- nothing worked!

over time she only woke up once or twice a night but this lasted til she stopped bottle and soother at 28months (gave them to santa!)! shes slept right through since (and including!) the night she gave them away! i cant blame the cot but i do think it played a huge part in it! she didnt need bottle or soother during the day or even to get to sleep but once she was in the cot she needed them as a comforter whenever she woke up so i do think it was related.

straight to cot with non of the padding around the side this prevents air circulation. Feet to base of bed. Our baby moves a lot in her sleep so we're a big fan of the grow bags. Keeps her nice and toasty

A lot of cots have an option to make it only about 2 feet deep and then lower the base when they are beginning to learn to sit up. My son HATED moses baskets, anytime he moved it creaked and he woke. We had 2 that were a pure waste! As soon as he went in his cot, he slept 5-7 hours without stirring.

I too am a fan of the gro bag you can get lovely cheap ones that are 2.5 tog in Pennys for a mere €8!!!! But as Crazy Cat Lady said, tk maxx is worth the look too.

Rather than get a moses basket and a cot, splash out on a nice cot and bed sheets! If you get a large one, it can do as a bed until they are 4/5!!!!

Ikea also do the grow bag/sleeping bag for babies - and are 7.99.

I wish they had had them when mine were infants - my nephew had them and I loved them.

Moses basket was a disaster for us with the creaking. She slept in her pram top ( it was one of the huge old ones) for a few weeks but I remember the day we put her in the cot bed (even bigger than a cot) and the way she stretched out her arms and went straight off to sleep.
