The CW...what's on this week

The fall TV season starts this week -- sort of.

Only a few shows start their new seasons this week, and only on The CW network. For the "Big Four" networks you'll have to wait until the week of Sept. 20.

The first new show of the season is Hellcats, which will make its debut at 9 p.m. Wednesday on CW, after the season premiere of America's Next Top Model. Hellcats is a better-than-you'd-expect comedy-drama about college cheerleaders, focusing on a pre-law student who grudgingly joins the cheerleading squad after losing her scholarship. Any similarity to the energetic hijinks on Glee is not necessarily coincidental.

The next day, the new season continues with the second-season debut of The Vampire Diaries, followed by the premiere of the new Nikita (9 p.m. Thursday on CW), an action series about a sexy spy. If the name is familiar, there's a reason: It's the latest version of La Femme Nikita, a 1990 French action film from director Luc Besson. It was remade in 1993 for American audiences as Point of No Return with Bridget Fonda. In 1997 it became a weekly series, La Femme Nikita, which ran for five seasons on the USA network with Peta Wilson in the lead role.

Maggie Q plays the title role in the new Nikita. Her character has left the nefarious secret agency that she once worked for and has gone rogue. It's fun and fast-paced, and Maggie Q -- who first gained fame in Hong Kong action films, including the entertaining Gen-Y Cops -- does her own stunts.

Next week, CW will have the season premieres of 90210 and Gossip Girl on Sept. 13, and One Tree Hill, which is filmed in Wilmington, and Life Unexpected on Sept. 14. Fans of Smallville and Supernatural will have to wait until Sept. 24 for new episodes.

I've a feeling my other half will love 'Hellcats' and I've an even greater feeling 'Nikita' will be mind-numbingly mediocre.
