H Dip in Science (Computer Science) (NUIM)

Hey. Just wondering if anyone knows about this course. I've applied for it late, unfortunately. I'm just wondering what number of students they take in each year for the course, and if they usually have any empty places. Basically I'm wondering if I have any hope getting in as a late applicant. If not I can forget about it and move on.

    Thanks!

There was about 4 lads doing it last year I think but you have to remember its the same course as 4th year CS and their is about 30 or so doing that.

I would be confident saying that you would get in based on last years figures but then again I dont know the story with admissions.

Oh thanks for the reply! I'm really really hoping I get in.

So being the same course as 4th year CS, does that mean you're just thrown in with those 30 or so students, or do you do a few different things as well? I'm just wondering how it works, since higher diploma students wouldn't have as much computer science as those who've been studying it for 3 years previously.

Again, thanks for the reply. I haven't had any luck ringing or emailing anyone in Maynooth. And I've been trying for a week.

Here is what you will be studying
    http://www.nuim.ie/courses/?Target=QS&Mode=VIEW&QUALIFICATION_CODE=HDCSC&YEAR=2011&TARGET_SOURCE=CS&KEYWORD=computer
and this is what the rest of 4th CSSE will have
    http://www.nuim.ie/courses/?Target=QS&Mode=VIEW&QUALIFICATION_CODE=CSEN&YEAR=2011&TARGET_SOURCE=CS&KEYWORD=computer

As you can see its pretty much the exact same, the only difference is that you have one more compulsory module Compilers (great craic doing that module I must admit :/) which the CSSE's do in their 3rd year. So yeah you are in the same class as them and you will be at a disadvantage but I wouldnt say you will struggle. Like two of the HDips out preformed me and a few of my class mates.

One thing I have learnt from my years in Maynooth is that the CS Dept never reply to emails, like I sent one of my lectures an email and in the next lecture I had for him he tells the hole class about my email but the ****er never even replied to it or answered my question. If you can go up and call into their office as that is the only way you will get an answer off them.

Who have you been trying to contact out of interest?

Ahh. Yeah I didn't manage to find that on the website. Thanks! That's interesting alright. I hope I survive.

Interesting they never reply to emails, not used to that - I'll keep it in mind! Probably will head out there soon anyway.

I've tried contacting the admin office and a few other contacts listed on the website - I'm not really sure tbh.

I'm not going to lie but the compulsory modules are quite difficult but most of the course will find it the same but if you work at them you should be okay.

Obviously they do reply to some emails but it really is hit and miss as regrading replies.

They will be a lot more helpful if you go up and see them. If you do get accepted PM me and I can tell you about the modules.

Yeah having a look at some of those modules has me a bit worried. I'll be going in soon and will ask more about the level of maths I'd be expected to have already.

And thanks, you've been exceptionally helpful! I will PM you if and when. :]

This course started today as far as I know!

There are 2 weeks of programming from today onwards, before other lectures start on 20th Sept.

Am studyin the HDip in IT and was at the intro to programming today. You should email the head of the department and ask can you attend on a temperary basis while your paperwork is being filled out. Check out the closing date, if its still open register quick.

Don't confuse the HDip in IT with the HDip in CS. I did see people in lab 2 today though, but I assume that if people doing the HDip in CS will be doing 4th year modules they won't [shouldn't] need a two week programming intro.

Like most CS degrees in Ireland, it is funded so this year you only pay €2,500 and the year after its €2,750. Which is really good as a lot of my mates are paying around €8,000 for their Post graduate courses.
