Do they just hire musicians and stick uniforms on them, or are they actually soldiers within the force?

Speaking to a drummer who "did side-work" for the army.

This couldn't possibly be true could it?

    Defence Forces School of Music

The title Defence Forces School of Music (DFSM) is a Corps title that encompasses all elements of the Defence Forces’ music service. These elements are the Directorate, the Headquarters incorporating the Army No.1 Band and the School of Music, and two detached military bands, namely The Band of 1 Southern Brigade and The Band of 4 Western Brigade.

The role of the Defence Forces School of Music is to service the ceremonial and musical requirements of the State and the Defence Forces. In addition it provides a music service to the citizens of the country by way of the following schemes:

    Public Recitals
A limited number of engagements usually performed in Public Parks and local authority spaces to which the general public has free access.

    Festivals
Festivals may apply for the services of a band. The band may be provided without incurring an engagement fee - the festival organisers however are responsible for transport and subsistence costs. Under this scheme the general public must also have free access to the band’s performance.

    Instrumentalist Engagements
Musicians or small ensembles (fanfare teams, quintets, pipers etc) may be hired on an individual basis provided that civilian musicians are not available to fulfil the engagement.

    School Concerts
Military bands fulfil a limited number of School engagements per year. These concerts are educational in nature and are tailored to the requirements of primary and secondary school students.

All the above schemes are provided subject to the exigencies of the service.

For information contact the Administrative Officer Defence Forces School of Music.

Dont forget these chaps, who perform side by side with AGS at Rugby/Soccer/GAA etc

Defence Forces School of Music - No.1 Band

The No. 1 Band was formed in 1923 and gave its first public performance under the direction of Colonel Fritz Brase at the Theatre Royal, Dublin, in October of that year. The Band, the first of four military bands established between 1923 and 1936, has retained its original title.

The No. 1 Band has performed at all major ceremonial occasions since the foundation of the State, including all Presidential Inaugurations from that of President Douglas Hyde to the present day.

The band’s engagement schedule now includes attendance at Áras an Uachtaráin for Presentation of Credentials ceremonies of newly appointed Ambassadors, the provision of musical support for State visits to Ireland by foreign Heads of State and high profile State Engagements such as The National Day of Commemoration. In addition the band fulfils all military music requirements for the Defence Forces’ Eastern Brigade.

Concert engagements at the National Concert Hall, recitals in St. Stephen’s Green, Dublin, and a highly successful Schools Concerts programme are a regular part of the band’s life.

The band has performed at festival and military tattoos in Italy, Holland, Germany and France.

And I'm guessing it's also very difficult to join?

Bandsmen are just musicians who have had uniforms stuck on them. Pipers are real soldiers who have learned to play the pipes.
