    Hi everyone,

    I just started 3rd year last wednesday and im abit worried to be honest. I do English ( Honours ) , Irish ( Pass ) , Maths ( Honours - Might change to pass ) French ( Honours ) Geography ( Honours ) Tech Graph ( Honours ) Science ( Honours ) Metalwork ( Honours ) Woodwork ( Havn't decided yet ) Business Studies ( Honours ) CSPE ( Honours )

    A few questions/worries ..

    1. When is the best time to start studying?

To be honest, I kept up in class for 1st and 2nd year but didn't give it 100% .. Is 3rd year too late? I feel for Maths and Woodwork, Im in trouble with. I want to do Honours but its very tough. I got 3 B's, 4 C's and 4 D's in my 2nd year summer results. Im afraid that when it comes to the junior cert, Ill find out I havn't studied enough.. basically Ive fears of the Junior Cert all ready!!

    2. Any tips/advice for studying?

I can never seem to apply myself to my homework/study! Ive found out if I listen to music while doing my written homework, it helps me stay in the one place rather than getting up the whole time!

    3. Any good books to help revise?

Our Irish teacher told us to get Revise Wise because its a great help. Anyone have any feedback?

    Thanks very much,
    Pádraig

Im in 5th year. Maybe you should consider grinds. (Im doing honours maths, which i find hard and im getting grinds) Sometimes in class its annoying if you have a bad teacher and he/she is explaining it in a confusing way. Also, in maths for instance, if your on a certain chapter that your finding difficult grinds can be a big help as your grinds teacher will be solely focused on you or the other few in your grinds class. Is after school study an option? This is very handy as it removes the distractions of home and your room. Some people find it hard to sit down and study as their mind might tend to wonder and if after school study is available this might help. Im definitely going to be getting revise wise books too, as there supposed to help you study. I see you mentioned these and I think they might help u especially with subjects such as Maths, Science and Irish.

It is never too early to start studying but you should probably build it up because if you start at 100 miles an hour you will be burned out by the time the JC comes around. But if there is something you so in class that you dont fully understand you should defo go over it when you go home. They recommend that your homework plus study should take about 3 hours in 3rd year. But obviously this will vary if you have less homework or if you gave tests coming up.

Dont be too worried about not giving it 100% in 1st and 2nd year as you still have all the year to make up for that. It will take a lot of hardwork.

    Good luck

How did you manage to do Business, Metalwork, Tech Graph, and Woodwork? You're not doing History either?

Start studying now on the things you're not good at and then work on the others around xmas. Flash cards are a great help for poetry and definitions. you can get them in tesco in the 3 for 2 range at the moment. Get revise wise for the harder subjects and they should help you.
TIP: You should get together with some mates and choose a subject to work on. If you each do a past exam, you can check the answers and then swap the work between you. I did that for some of my leaving cert subjects and came up by two grades in the real thing. :)

All depends on the school you go to.

I'd advise tipping away till close to the pre's.Just study for any class exams and such.2 weeks+ before the pre's knuckle down.Do a good few exam papers. If you can get used to those and be able to them the exam will be fine! Then after the pre's sometimes it can take a long time to get your results so don't wait for those.Think about how you did..if your not happy with a certain subject work at do more exam papers..take up a few grinds before the JC

Ah for study..after school study is good..your still in the 'school mentality' and haven't chilled out and relaxed at home yet some it can be easier to work there.Don't leave it too late at night,i could never motivate myself to work while tired, bed was just to tempting!!:-)

As for revision books in all depends...Revise Wise are very detailed..they can almost replace your text book i found..rapid revision is less detailed but still covers all points.Id recommend getting some of these as all the info is there in front of you.You don't have to hunt it down in your book.Looking for common questions in past papers is always good too.

You don't need to be giving 100% in 2nd year. Just do your best from here on in, 2-3 hours including homework a night.

to be honest there is absolutely nothing to worry about! i know when you start 3rd year you start to panic but don't i did the same last year when i did mine but when i sat the exams it was grand! you just mess around with your friends in between exams, and im not one of those people who dont care about education. all you should do is, try to do all your homework every night and then if you have time study what you did for maybe 20-40 minutes. 2-3 hours is way too much! if you study too much you will be wrecked every night. also don't study every night, study maybe 3 or 4 nights a week. it's important to give yourself breaks. also get a good night sleep, its worth it, and also have a good breakfast! then when your pre's are around the corner, don't panic, you won't have every bit of your courses done, so just study what you have covered, the examiner will know this.

for the revision books, you should get revise wise, it's very good i used it for my junior cert and i thought it was great. Also you should look at pass papers, they will give you an idea of what the exam is like.

For your maths problem, you should maybe do some grinds, they really do pays off , i did grinds for my irish and it was great, it was awful going every week but it really paid off.

i hope this has helped you:)

you'll be fine there's nothing to worry about! after you've done your first paper which will most likely be English Paper 1 you'll be wondering why you worried!

    Best of luck!

I got suspended in second year, didn't do my homework at all in 3rd year, started studying about a month before (made a few predictions too) and came out last year with 4 As, 5 Bs and 2 Cs :)
