I'm trying to make my final decision on my four first year Arts subjects. I'll be doing a 100 km round trip each day so things have to fit in with the bus schedule for me or else I'm in trouble. I more or less have the subject choices figured out but unsure when tutorials might be, as I only have the lecture timetable? I attended a mature student orientation a couple of weeks ago and from what I recall we were told the tutorial timetable only becomes available when term starts.

Was at UCC a few years back (didn't get past year 1) and for the course I was doing then (law - HATED IT) I remember tutorials were mainly in the afternoon and evening (unless I'm mistaken) Would it be the same with Arts?

And by the way....when the hell are you supposed to have lunch if you have classes from (in my case, if I go with those subjects) 11am to 4pm, non-stop. Guess it's grab a sandwich on your way from one lecture to another kinda thing?!!! Never had that problem when doing the BCL last time. I mean seriously like, to function properly ya need to have lunch!

By the way, in Arts are there Xmas, Easter and Summer exams? When I was doing law the only exams we had were in May. And if you fail any are the repeats in August? Thanks.

Tutorials are at different times. As far as I remember, you get to choose which the time which suits you from the times listed.

Learn to eat and run at the same time.

For some modules there are Xmas in-class tests, take home essays and yes, there are summer exams. If you fail, you'll repeat in the autumn.

Yeah I also heard we get to pick our tutorial times, however it's first come first served.

However maybe if you email or phone the departments of the subjects that you are thinking of taking, and explain your situation they may be able to help. Worth a shot anyway. :D

With regards to lunch, the arts timetable looks to be set out so 1pm-2pm is free for lunch (the timetable linked is the simpler brief overview, without class locations). But if you decide to pick a tutorial (that's if they are available then) in that spot then you'll have to be flexible on when you're gonna eat. :/

    Hope that helps :)

Oh and exams - I guess it all depends on what subjects you take. Best way to find out is to have a look at the modules for each subject where it says "Assessment". For example English (EN1001) is:
Assessment: Total Marks 300: End of Year Written Examination 240 marks; Continuous Assessment 60 marks ( 5 essays 45 marks; Tutorial Attendance and Contribution 15 marks).

    And the exams breakdown as:
    End of Year Written Examination Profile: 2 x 3 hr(s) paper(s).

Getting to choose would be good, I know nobody really goes to all tutorials in any case. Eat and run, eat and run....ok, I'll remember that :D Actually I misread the timetable, 1pm to 2pm is always free. Phew! Having the repeats are very handy, not that I'm going into uni with a view to having to avail of the facility but things can happen, you can get sidetracked and boom before you know it you're far, far behind!

Don't worry, just do a little work - often - and you won't need to come back in the Autumn. Best of luck to you! :)
