Weight Loss Bet

    Right,

Not sure where to put this so I figured here was most appropriate :)

Anyways, I'm looking to set up a weight loss prop bet in work with one other lad. We're unsure on how it should run though. Some are saying we should go by weight loss percentage, some saying first to lose 'X' amount of lbs and others are saying measure by BMI.

Has anybody ever done anything similar or got any suggestions?!

    Thanks!

Stupid bet. Just make the terms so that its more likely you'll win.

I'm not so much fat, just happened to have developed a little belly :)

I'm less than 160 lbs at 6 foot.

Not entirely stupid. Even if he loses the bet he still loses the weight and that itself is winning the battle.

Lookit, wimmim and men across the country throw €10 a week to a stranger to weigh them. Go for it. Throw the tenner a week into a pot for say....6 weeks? Winner is the one who loses the most on the scales. If there is a huge difference in your weights though youre just going to argue over "how fair" the rules are.

Best of luck with it OP

The answer to this is the same as the answer to many of life's big questions: Sausages!

What you do is weigh each participant, then divide their weight by the weight of the average sausage, which is 2oz. At the end of the contest you weigh everyone again and once more find their weight in sausages. Whoever has lost the most sausages wins! Their weight in sausages!!

This is how it's always done where I work.

Set a target percentage of weight loss for each of you based on BMI, closest to the percentage required wins

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,943 ✭✭✭wonderfulname

% is the most accurate of your options, BMI is bull and the fattest of your group will win if its just lbs.

And then go fall in love. It made me lose 2.5 stone :D

There's not a huge difference in the two of us.

    I'm roughly 160 lbs and he's roughly 145 lbs.

It's actually right around the time I got with the missus did I notice the weight being packed on. I was smoking 20 a day at the time too but am now a year off.

When I was smoking I weighed roughly 9 stone, then gave up the smokes and within about 8-10 weeks I was up at over 13.6 stone

Weird, I was thinking of adding the information that I do NOT work in a butchers. I should have.

I still think the sausages way is the best. If it's just a fun, work thing then you don't want to be going into all this specific percentage, BMI, TMI stuff. Keep it light and fun. The participants are still gonna lose weight, right? So it's (to use an American expression) all good. Unless the prize is a house in North Colorado or a trip to the original set of The Thing, 'cause then competition would be pretty fierce.

OP just do what you have to do, reckn I've lost about 2-3 stone in the last year, it's all about willpower!

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 11,139 Mod ✭✭✭✭Mr. Manager

Willpower is the tough part. I was using the gym in work 3-4 nights a week. Then was unable to go for a period of 2 weeks and have found it near impossible to get back into the routine again and I know it's all about routine!

That's why I've set up this bet to keep me from falling off the wagon, again!

Plus we're always giving each other grief about whose belly hangs over the *keyboard most!

    1. Strap some weights to your inner groin for the original weigh-in.*
    2. Lose some weight.

    4. Profit.

OP I have a rather radical method here , try to stay with me here, there's a new school of thought that suggests that eating less and excercising more can cause you to shed the pounds! Give it a whirl and you'll win the bet no matter how it's phrased

Do it a fiver per pound you lose. Don't go by BMI as the person who loses weight but gains muscle is going to lose..

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,104 ✭✭✭easyeason3

I have heard that muscle weighs more than fat. I don't know how true that is really because I imagine a pound of fat would weigh the same amount as a pound of muscle on a scales, but hey, I'm no expert.

What you need to do is start limiting the amount you are eating each day & excercise like your life depended on it. Limit or cut out the shyte food, go off the drink & start walking more. You should see a difference in about two weeks.

However if it's a quick fix you want then you can lick a bit of raw chicken/ mince. A healthy dose of salmonella never hurt anyone.

Hang on a sec, I'm skinny, 5' 10" and weight around 145 lbs... how short is your mate??

Very hard to set such a bet:

you've to take into account who has more water retained (easier to lose and first to go), who has bigger fat % currently and possibility of building muscle (denser than fat)

Also if you've different body types, someone will be at a disadvantage (see here: http://www.bodybuildingpro.com/bodytypeinformation.html)

a guy in my school bet that he'd lose three stone over the sumeer three months. everyone in the year went in for something and the pot came to near enough 300 euros. came back last week nd he'd lost excactly 3 stone went from 17st 1 to 14st 1. he stands to make a lot of money but what a ****ing acheivement.

Heh, that reminds me of the "Which is heavier, a tonne of coal or a tonne of feathers?" conundrum... :)

Muscle does weigh more than fat though, so if you're visibly shrinking and noticing you're more toned and you need smaller clothes sizes yet the scales figure isn't showing much of a decrease - even an increase, then that's weight gain from muscle development.

I think muscle is something like x3 as dense as fat?

I'm less than 160 lbs at 6 foot.

You must have absolutely no muscle then, sounds like you two need to run a competition to see who can gain the most in a given period.

I seen some of that TV show before "the biggest loser" as I was actually curious of the same thing (how do they make it fair).

They were weighing people on day one, and then working out what percentage of bodyweight they had lost at the end of it all.

Seems the best way. So if you're 20 stone, chances are you'll lose more weight than a person of 10 stone, but seen as it's a percentage, it balances it out.

Get two similar belts that you both own. Look at which hole is normally used for tightening the belt - usually it's a bit worn or something.

First one to reduce their waist to 3 holes smaller wins. Not a great method, but it's ok.

That 15lbs may be a big difference, if this guy isn't overweight - then expecting him to lose 20 lbs while you lose 20 lbs is a very different thing.

 I don't follow your logic, their BMI is related to their weight. I had the same weight and the therefore the same BMI for about a year yet steadily lost fat in that time. BMI makes no differentiation between fat & muscle, just like your "fiver per pound" doesn't.

The bet was who lost most weight, it is very simple, trying to workout who lost the most FAT is the very hard bet, the OP never mentioned fat though. To weigh more on the first day you could force down loads of water, and dehydrate yourself like a boxer or jockey would on the final weigh in.

Strange that so many medical professionals still use it then. People who moan about BMI already know when & where it is not suitable, and so does any decent medical professional. I expect 99% of people for whom BMI is not an advisable measure already know it (e.g. bodybuilders).

That's my point. The OP could work his ass off and be screwed over in the bet if the other guy 'gets lucky' with the weighing, so to speak. I'm just being pedantic though! :pac:

Looking at the height of his friend, unless he is considerably lacking in muscle, I doubt he's gonna lose much, or anything for that matter, as I'm a bit taller and the same weight and doubt I'd lose much at all. Could be a good one for the OP on that basis!

a group of 10 of us did a competative weight loss in August,we did it by who lost the most,50 each in the pot, winner took all. Should have done it by percentage. Was great incentive though!!!! 500!!!!
