Am using windows vista. Only safari works. When I try to download an anti virus or use IE or Mozilla it says no network connection is detected and sometimes asks me for prozy information.

What is that? What is going on?

    Please advise. Thanks.

Dont understand what you mean? Is Safari working or is it not? A proxy server just sits between you and your Internet access, and can be useful for bypassing DNS issues, for tracking/controlling people's access (when used by IT Admins in organizations), or for using a foreign IP address... etc etc..

Was your PC taken from another network where it would have been set up to use a proxy?? If you download Firefox or Google Chrome or any of the other browsers that are freely downloadable from the web, their default configuration should be NOT to use a proxy..

Safari is working. However, I cannot download an anti virus such as avg because it says its operating on a proxy.

Mozilla wont work at all. Neither will IE. I get message that says cant connect to the network. Yet I am connected to the network because the two little screens with the bubble appear at the lower right hand corner.

My PC was not taken from another network to my knowledge. I use it at home and use eircom broadband.

If access to all AV sites are blocked (check this) then it is likely that you have a virus... What AV software are you using at the moment, and can you see an icon for it on the system tray .. (bottom right beside the digital clock)

Im not using any anti virus. I have security essentials. I had avast but I got rid of it because it wasn't letting me use safari either. I cant download any anti virus because of this proxy message.

Well check first of all whether or not Internet Explorer on your PC is actually set to use a proxy server. Instructions here

As for Safari, are you saying that it works fine for everything else except when you try to navigate to an antivirus website? If you are getting an error message can you post the full and exact message?

When you say Security Essentials, are you referring to Microsoft Security Essentials? If you've got that installed then you don't need another antivirus program for now.

If your machine is infected and it's the infection that is preventing access to some sites then try firstly accessing the sites in Safe Mode. If that doesn't work, download Malwarebytes onto another PC and copy it (using a USB drive or anything else you have availble) onto the first one. Then install Malwarebytes, update it (if possible), run it (first in Safe Mode and then in Normal mode) and post any logs.
