Thermostat Attached to Nothing.

    Hi all.

We've had a fair few problems with our house, one of which is that the thermostat on the wall is actually just a box attached to nothing.

Winter's a nightmare, as when we have the heating on it's full whack or nothing. How big a job would it be to install a working thermostat now, and how much would I be looking at for the job?

    Any advice welcomed.

You can get wireless thermostats that fit easily into existing systems.
If someone knew what they were doing ,it would only take an hour to install.

I'm not sure of the prices of individual receivers and thermostats ,as I buy them in bulk.

    Link of a Danfoss one.

Really? That sounds like an ideal solution as we have four kids and need minmal disruption really.

    I'll look into that, cheers.

So who would I need to install this? Just a competent electrican or a plumber?

    Thanks.

Either really ,danfoss is more easily available at plumbers merchants.
Brands like Sunvic are more easily available at electricial outlets ,but I'm not sure about sunvic wireless products.

If you log onto the seai website and checkout the installers list.
From the right hand side ,filter the search to "Heating Controls Upgrade"

the wireless units cost approx 70-90 euro plus the cost of the stat which is about 15 euro. i would have said it was a job for a sparks but most plumbers are well able to wire up a stat and a wireless type should be just as handy.

    Cheers for the reply.
Just to clarify, will the thermostat replace our current old style box? The one where you can set the heating at 30 minute intervals, and the wireless unit can be placed anywhere in the house?

The thermostat would go between the clock/timer and the boiler.
Basically you would use the clock as before and the thermostat would take over from there.
The proper way to do this is by valve on a pipe ,but it's possible to control the switch to the boiler directly.

Theres €500 grants for this type of stuff ,so it could be worth your while getting someone to look into it for you.
Maybe get direct advice from someone on the list I linked you to.

To be honest your room thermostat is not your problem.
Most room stats are located in the wrong place and I’ve disconnected more that I’ve replaced.
A room stat controls the heat in your house based on the air temperature at that give point
The boiler stat controls the water temperature going through your system.
Question 1 what is your boiler thermostat set at, it may be set too low
Question 2 do you have plenty of hot water. If the answer is no check out question 1. If the answer is yes then you need to have your system balanced.
Question 3 if none of the above answers your problem then it may be a boiler problem
What make and model of boiler do you have?

Hi.it's a firebird oil-burning boiler. I'll check out the temp on it once I've dropper the kids.
We don't tend to have a lot of hot-water now you mention it.

Apologies ,I took it that your house was too warm and you wanted to control the heat:(

Oh I do mate, that's the major thing in winter. :)
The systems not great as a whole though to be honest. The guy who did the plumbing work on the house has an abysmal reputation so God knows what's lurking waiting to go wrong next.

Just to add, I've only been in Ireland a few years and am still getting used to oil-fired heating.
