what homes means in colors movie

In colors with Sean Penn and Robert Duvall they keep saying 'homes' . What does that refer to? Is it a reference to the gang members being home boys i.e from that area and if so why say it to the cops?

Oh I see that explains why Frog was saying Homes to officer Bob Hodges. I thought it was a slang within the black neighbourhood but that link says it is friend or respected person and there was a sort of respect between frog and Hodges. Thanks homes:D
