VISTA system repair loop! no pending.xml file

    Hey,
I've been searching for a solution online for a few hours now but to no avail. My machine just keeps booting straight to system repair and I can't even boot in safe mode. I keep tapping f8 and then I can select "Repair your computer", select a language, log in as my user (can't login as admin for some reason) and then can select command prompt.
Many people solved this by deleting c:/windows/winsxs/pending.xml but that file doesn't exist for me, cleanup.xml is the only .xml file in this folder.
I don't know what to do!
    Any suggestions??

Boot from your installation DVD, select "Repair your computer" and then use System Restore to roll back to an earlier restore point.

Fysh, I am able to access system restore from the f8 boot menu but it doesn't work. I don't think having the installation dvd in will make a difference (If I had it on me). I can get get one if it's really necessary but I don't think that will help. Surely, I have to edit the registry or something. (I can reach the dos prompt)

The Vista system repair loop often indicates bad sectors on the HDD.

I've fixed two with a restore and both eventually failed again with the same error loop, one after a few hours another after a couple of days.

I'd test by taking out the HDD and mounting it in another PC (either internally or in an external USB case) copy off your important data first and if you get errors doing that the HDD really is bad. Then replace the drive and try a reinstall safe in the knowledge that when it does fail you have your data backed up.

So worst case senario, you need a new HDD and a copy of your operating system DVD hopefully you still have a readable OS COA sticker on the case somewhere.
