I found this: http://www.adverts.ie/275895/bikes/touring-bike-frame/ on adverts. Was originally going to use it as a beater bike for getting around town. How and ever, it's quite a nice frame (reynolds 531st) and I have a good friend in need of a decent touring bike so it looks like we'll be taking advantage of good value online and a 500ish euro budget to modernize this relic.

I plan on getting a new set of wheels first off, was thinking these: http://www.wiggle.co.uk/p/cycle/7/MWheel_Shimano_Deore~Mavic_A319_Rear_Road_Bike_Wheel/5360035959/ coupled with a 9 speed mountain bike groupset and a shimano deore rear derailleur and some of these bar end shifters: http://www.wiggle.co.uk/p/cycle/7/Dia-Compe_Bar_End_Gear_Shifter_Set/5360043252/ (I presume these will work with the mountain bike derailleur since they are friction shift or have I been misinformed?).
Anyone have any thoughts on any of this? Spot any problems or incompatible equipment or know of any better options for much the same price?

I would like leave the original exage front derailleur and sugino triple chainrings since they seem to be in pretty good condition and work fine. Does anyone know will I be able to get the 9 sp rear derailleur and cassette to work with the original components which were obviously designed for 7 speed, or will I have to upgrade them too?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Bump, so yeah, anyone know if the old chainring, crankset and front derailleur will work with modern 9sp stuff or what?
I suppose I'll just have to bull on with a bit of trial and error.

You should be fine running the mix of 9sp and 7sp - the shifting at the front probably won't be buttery-smooth, but with the front shifter running on friction you'll be grand. The one possible pitfall is that the narrower chain might drop between the chainrings from time to time, but sure, try it and see.

    It'll be grand.

I have an old stronglight chainset (maybe originall on a 6 speed) and it worked well on my 9 speed tourer until I put a compact on instead.

The rear dropout spacing may be 126mm on that old frame but I have put 130mm wheels in 'em before without any fuss.

Budget wheel option for light touring.32 hole 3 cross afaik.

Worth remembering that those old steel frames may be rusted internally so you probably don't want to load it too much. (or spend too much on it.:))
