Sustainability of construction

If we are near peak oil and the cost of energy to produce building products Will rise in the future, will construction remain sustainable over the next few decades?

Will the continuation of medium to large scale construction in Ireland and other first world countries over the same period be dependent on an increasing population which can only be ensured by creating new jobs in these economies?

I am in the construction sector but trying to see what sort of future is in the industry in the medium to long term.

Any research available on the above matters?
