just looking for opinions on this car . it seems like a flash bit of kit for small money . are they a ball of s**t mechanically ? . i presume it would be a gas guzzler and road tax would be a no no. if you had your chauffers cap on it would look the biz.

IMO it would cost a **** load to keep on the road, that's not factoring in any work that needs to be done

96 xjs parked up in local tesco carpark for the last week if you want. Not sure who left it, but still has towbelts in front of it :)

cheaper than paying someone to take the thing away.

but this thing above looks immaculate apart from the running costs .

Avoid the auto, the autobox ain't the best. Far better to go for the older version. Much cooler too.

    :eek::eek::eek::eek:

A manual jag? No way, autobox everytime!

The S Type (apart from the ugly grille) is a beautiful car, both aesthetically and to drive. The killer is the running costs. Annual tax of over 1200 euro, fuel economy in the mid 20s mpg, and also factor in high maintanence & repair costs.

The amount of post '99 S and X type Jags I've seen on Donedeal with fecked autoboxes is astounding. That's why I recommend avoiding them. I'd rather buy an XJS or XJ6.

+1, but a manual Jag is just plain wrong.

Deffo - I love the older jags, especially the XJS, also the XJ8.

However I would never buy a manual jag, its like buying a manual merc, pointless and takes away from the driving experience!

Was the S Type even available in Manual?

Yes it was. Only on lower models though.

I wonder is it an indication of how well the cars have been looked after ?

The autobox is 'sealed for life' with long-life oil but... the oil goes bad after about 80,000 miles resulting in notchy gearchanges and ultimately failures in the mechanism.

Most Jag independents know this, so would have the oil flushed and changed.

If I were shopping for one, I'd seek this out in the service receipts.

I saw this the other day , look at the picture of the Speedo dials . the engine is ticking over as per the rev counter and the check engine light is on ...not a good sign....

On all models except the V8 petrol 4l top model which was auto only. I've never even seen one of them over here. In fact I've never seen a manual S-type. Which is a good thing :)
