Media Player 11 not installing

03-09-2010 8:25pm#1I am trying to upgrade my wmp-9 to wmp-11. I have downloaded it a few times and after going trough installing procedure it tells me that it can not install the player and to restart and try again.
I have windows XP Home with SP3.
I even tried to install media player 10 and it tells me that this version is not compatible with my OS. What is the problem, please help !!

Wmp10 is supposed to be for windows xp with service pack 2 and I have Xp with service pack 2 and 3. So there should not be a problem. I also installed wmp 11 from your recommendation and got the same result as always, but thanks anyway.

That seems to indicate that the setup program it's trying to do something that it doesn't have permissions to do.
Could you post up the contents of C:\Windows\wmp11.log?0 -

I remember going through something similar with that pile of sh1te vista.
In the end, I just installed Media Monkey, it's brilliant and I haven't looked back 0 -

i dont know if i was you i would ditch WMP at all...wmp11 was ok i liked it but it was a bit slow...especially when you got a large media file library...
then i got W7 and they got WMP12 which is worse in user experience and slower...
ended up switching to foobar2000...its easy on resources if you got a lower performance pc/laptop...it doent have great UI but you can get themes for it 0 -

Cheers for that mate. Now, umm, could you also put up some of C:\Windows\updspapi.log? I'm looking especially for a line like "Error 5: Access is denied." somewhere near the end and the five or six lines above and below it. It should indicate what the installer is having trouble accessing. 0 -

That's the registry key that's giving you trouble. Open Regedit, navigate to this key and see if you can delete it.
(Note that it might be under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE instead of HKLM in Windows XP - I forget! :P)
If you do manage to delete the LowRate key, try to re-install Windows Media Player 11. If you're unsure about working with the registry let us know and we'll walk you through it. 0 -

Got as far as "settings" in the register and when I click it the following message comes up: " Cannot open settings. Error while opening key."

You need to take ownership of the Settings key and all subkeys.
- Right-click on the Settings key.
- Select Permissions and click OK.
- Click on the Advanced button in the bottom-right of the window that appears.
- Click on the Owner tab.
- Select your name from the list below.
- Check "Replace owner on subcontainers and objects" and click on OK.
If you get any Access is Denied error messages ignore them. When you're presented with Regedit again try re-opening the Settings key. If you can then continue navigating towards MP3Encoding\LowRate.

Ok thanks that worked, No more error message when I click settings key but there is nothing else in the settings folder just " Name: ab(Default), Type:REG_SZ, Data: Value not set. I seem not to be able to navigate to anything else after this. :eek:0 -

It's definitely that Settings key that's the problem. If we can get that sorted then you should be able to install Windows Media Player 11 no bother.
Open Regedit, right-click on the settings key and select Permissions. Click on the Advanced button.
Uncheck "Include inheritable permissions from this object's parent". When you're asked to Copy or Remove the parent's permissions, choose Copy.
Now click on Add. Type your username in the text box and click on OK. In the Permissions box that appears, check Full Control under Allow and click on OK.
Check the box that says "Replace all child object permissions with inheritable permissions from this object". Click on OK.
In Regedit click on View and then Refresh. Let me know if you can now see anything under the Settings key. 0 -
