Foynes Port

    Minister seeks submissions on ports

The issue of Foynes comes up here from time to time. This is the beginning of a consultation on the ports nationally. I imagine the reasoning behind this is to close up to 50% of the ports in the county as a country this size really should be able to manage on less than 10 commercial ports.

Would be a ridiculous decision if Foynes were to be downgraded in any way. It's location and position as third busiest port in Ireland should be enough to ensure no cuts there.

If anything, Foynes is in a position where it could be upgraded and use things like the already in place rail line and rail station to transport goods, and to reduce the need for as many trucks servicing the port as does now.

But then again it is Dempsey that is involved, so common sense goes out the window somewhat.

unfortunately its cheaper to transport goods by truck than train, so the rail line will never reopen

I knew that going by truck was cheaper if the load needed just one or two trucks. Does the same applies for loads that end up needing 10 to 20, or even more, trucks to transport it across Ireland?

Just thought it made sense for things that come in at Foynes Port that then get whisked across the country by trucks to one of the ports on the East side, to go by train instead.

Figured with all the waffle that comes of of Dempsey and Gormley about reducing traffic on the roads, that their brief should involve doing something like using the already there rail lines and making it cost effective.

Then again I am the type who also thought that a rail line to Shannon Airport with a stop at the Shannon Industrial estate was a good idea back when the airport was busy. Thought the same about a proper rail line to the other two main airports as well.

I think I am so used to the excellent rail service/bus service in Germany and also being able to go by rail from the likes of Heathrow, that I end up wanting something similar in Ireland.

Unfortuantely the railway would have to be completely re-laid from Foynes-Limerick. Iarnroid Eireann said recently enough they'd do it but only if the port authority paid for it, or something like that.

This isn't an argument about what MIGHT happen to Foynes Port, it is an opportunity for YOU to have an INPUT rather than just whinging on an internet forum, like you've just started. You have turned a completely positive thread negative in one post.
