    Fairly detailed background notes here

The current rail service is not viable with an annual operating cost of €1.9 million and fewer than 50 passengers using the service each way (just 20% of actual maximum capacity). Fare income amounts to c€50,000 each year.

    Does not compute:

250 people a day each way is max capacity? Max income then is 250k per year?
    That cannot be right
Irish Rail will be contractually obliged to ensure that the rail line is maintained in place to enable a re-instatement of services if transport demand and economic circumstances should improve sufficiently in the future. An asset management regime has to be implemented by Irish Rail and will be audited by the National Transport Authority.
Some good news, at least they can't rip it up

If I'm sober enough after the Magners League tonight I am starting a thread to highlight the railway experience of the Board members of the NTA - Dempsey appointed some of them - enough said! Another possible thread with a poll - which line do you think should be closed next is also in the pipeline.

It'll get the same incredible care and maintanence as Waterford-New Ross. Or Navan-Kingscourt. Or Tralee-Fenit.

The Barrow bridge will have a safety stop order on it by 31/12/2010, mark my words.

I would be very surprised if that did not happen. Maybe even sooner.
