Is it just me?

I know that I probably should have put this into the county forum but a mod
can move this if they so wish. It's just that quite enough of us city folk use
    Tramore as a recreational spot.

I've been in Tramore a few times this summer & again this morning.
What irks me is the people who feel that the memorial on the prom'
is a place to picnic or to have a rest. When I was there this morning
two women were having a picnic on the memorial, complete with blanket,
& everything else. My view is that & I would assume that everybody
would feel the same that this is a MEMORIAL to four men who tragically
lost their lives & those mens families.

I don't see how it is disrespectful to use the memorial like that, it is designed to invite people to sit, and so long as they leave it tidy, what harm? Its on the Prom. You often get seats 'in memory' in public parks and seaside proms, it would not be disrespectful to sit on them.

If it was designed to be just a memorial, it would have been a good idea to put a fence round it, or not put the wide base on it. As it is, it would be quite possible to sit there and not notice till you were leaving, or not at all, that it was a memorial.

If that was the case then the William Vincent Wallace Plaza would be useless.

Fair enough so! Maybe it is just me who feels this way!
The whole length of the prom was available to sit upon
so why did they sit on the memorial? I still believe that
they were wrong to do so! After all a garden bench is
what it is & I take your point but this isn't a garden bench!
To each his own I suppose.

The memorial is at seating level so it invites people to sit on it.

I've been trying to think how to express this, but I have a feeling that it is a positive thing for the living to kind of 'interact' with the memory of the dead, and using the memorial makes a personal statement, rather than just walking past it. That's not very clear, but I somehow think it makes the memory more lasting than a cold, impersonal monument.

I agree, its disrespectful. But its only the out of town folk who do that and they probably dont know any better.

They should know there are benches the whole length of the prom so there's no excuse.

If it was not meant to be 'used' why was it designed as it is 'user friendly' and positioned on a prominade?
