Psychometric test - best practice?

I've been invited to start 'interviewing' for a very long elimination process (lots of applicants, very very few positions), starting with a psychometric test. I've picked up a couple of books on psychometric tests, all from the UK, all written in the last 3 years.
All the books outline 'best practice' for psychometric tests, including finding out your testing rights, enquiring as to who/which company has set the test, who will be administering the test etc...

Given that these are all UK books, is there also a 'best practice' for psychometric testing in Ireland?

The initial request to attend the test outlined the categories for the tests (eg abstract reasoning) but then said "no further information or Sample Papers on the Tests will be provided to candidates".

Would I be pushing my luck if I were to ask who provided the test? I know the companies that write the tests often offer sample questions.
I don't want a black mark against me for ignoring their statement about "no further information".

Is it for a programme to become a pilot by any chance? I know these are going on with some airline atm and involve these as a first step with enormous applicants for few places. I know someone who did the tests the other day.

No, it's an EU thing. But any experience (even second-hand) you can offer would be much appreciated.
Did your friends think the exams were harder than expected (ie I assume they did research for sample tests online)? Or much the same?

Standard aptitude type stuff was the reply. I would suggest that a small percentage of people ever try to prepare for these kinds of tests.

I admire your endeavour to give yourself the best chance, and hope that at the same time you don't get too wound up about doing the test at the time.

Although many of us here have studied / trained in administering psychometric tests I doubt we know much about how to prepare for them. I know I don't.

But for abstract reasoning for example (since you mention that one) you can get GMAT abstract reasoning tests with answers online, and I know I got Raven's Progressive Matrices online within the past year.

    Pretty standard answer :p
I do worry I might be over-complicating it at this early stage, but I'd much rather be over-prepared than under-prepared.

    Thanks :) - hadn't come across Raven's ones before.
