Orientation for first years commences the 20 Sept. I have an appointment that day and won't be able to attend. What happens on the first day of orientation?

Your pack from DCU should include the timetable for orientation. I can't remember exactly but it used to be the president of the college (or the VP), someone from security, your head of school and some other stuff. It's worth going if you can make it (it's a great time to meet people, if nothing else) but it's not essential.
