    Link not working.

Vrt based on emissions figures. Check revenue vrt calculator for estimate.

Tax cc based for pre 08 and emissions based for 08 onwards

    Road tax is €471

Seems to be a few different emissions listed for the Astra 1.7 Estate. If it's less than 140g you should be looking at about €500. Can't see it being much more for the dirtier engines.

Here's one with lower mileage, already imported to Ireland - http://www.carzone.ie/search/Opel/Astra/Estate-V/201035199397124/advert?channel=CARS

Don't think the e-bay one will work out much cheaper by the time you get it over.

    Thanks for the replies :)

Would be looking for a white one ROR, but thanks anyway :) just an idea I have in my head at the moment, not sure how certain I'd be of getting one. I've seen a few white ones in Ireland but they do seem to be quite rare in estate form.

I tried the revenue and tax calculator but wasn't sure if the prices were right seeing as though it's diesel and not petrol, or does that only effect insurance prices?

Have found a potential (already in IRE and Irish reg etc :)), but it's 1.4l PETROL compared to the 1.7TDI I'm used to, performance wise, how would they each compare would anyone know? According to vrt.ie, tax will be 320 anyway.

Have a look at Parker's Review. You'll find all the details there!

You need to be aware that since the NCT have taken over collecting VRT they are significantly overcharging people:

The 1.4 in the Astra feels fairly peppy to drive - certainly a lot better than the Ford or VW units, but it's a bit thirsty.

Wouldn't fancy using a 1.4 Astra estate or Van to carry much stuff around in. Would probably drink like an alcoholic when fully loaded.

Seem to remember there are coil issues and possibly head gasket's on that engine.

Worth looking for a diesel in any colour and getting it wrapped?

Thanks again for the replies :)

Think I'll stick to one already reg'd here, too much hassle etc to get one from the UK, it's just going to be a run-around pretty much so I could get one cheap enough, therefore there won't be much saving (in fact it would probably cost more) to get one from the UK.

ROR, consumption on my 1.7DTI is very good, 47mpg as far as I remember, 10 miles per euro pretty much :)

Would prefer to get the same, just in estate, they seem rare though but a white wrap could be an option, would prefer not to though :D

Just noticed the road tax on the 1.7TDI will be €453 compared to €320 on the 1.4 petrol. I always thought diesel was classed cheaper than petrol  Or is that just with insurance?

I'm not even sure if this would get enough use to make up that difference in savings unless the 1.4 is a very very hungry although when you say about carrying a lot of stuff around in, it would be carrying very little weight, maybe 400kg maximum (5 people) and 150kg average I'd say.

Road tax on pre-2008 vehicles is based on cubic capacity (apart from 01/08 to 06/08, which is either c.c. or CO2 - whichever is cheaper, although you had to opt for the cheaper one). I think insurance is based on the vehicle, not fuel type.

Thanks Esel. Will weigh up the options anyway and see how I get on :)

Right, so I checked with my insurance and a 1.7 Diesel will be exactly the same as a 1.4 petrol, I thought the diesel would be cheaper, so with tax being more expensive on the 1.7D than the 1.4 petrol, seems the petrol is the one to go for as I won't be using it enough to make up the savings in fuel per year.

Interesting, I thought the diesel would definitely be the cheaper option. Only thing I'm worried about now is putting diesel in the petrol since I'm used to my other astra :o

If you're planning on using it for business I don't think you can reclaim the VAT on petrol.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,845 ✭✭✭✭cormie

Would be using it for a bit of business errands alright but I'm almost certain you can reclaim VAT on petrol purchases. I can't see any reason you wouldn't be able, as with any other business expense? :)

VAT paid on petrol cannot be reclaimed.

That's two of you saying it now  hehe

Why is that? Sounds a bit crazy, if it's a business expense, should it not be reclaimable?

Definately can't reclaim the VAT on Petrol. If you convert it to run on E85 Ethanol, VAT is reclaimable on that. Don't know if the drop in fuel consumption and the current cost of E85 would make it worthwhile.

Ninty9er on here has his Astra converted I think.

    That's strange alright. I don't even know what E85 is :o

Is it available at all forecourts or only some? Cost of conversion etc probably wouldn't be worth it as this vehicle won't be getting much use anyway.
